TAXI DRIVER IS KILLED IN TWO-CAR ACCIDENT A taxi driver died when his cab was in collision with another car on Saturday. The man, working for Delta Central Cars, Osmaston Road, Derby, was driving a Vauxhall Cavalier in Ascot Drive when it was in collision with a Ford Focus at 6.20pm. The Cavalier was travelling towards London Road and the Focus was heading in the opposite direction. The taxi driver, who was not thought to have been wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The road was closed for three hours. Sub-officer Mat Lee, from Ascot Drive fire station, said the accident happened outside the Arriva bus station and was a "side-on collision". He added "We believe there was only one person in each vehicle. We didn't have to cut anybody free." Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Derbyshire southern road policing unit on 01773 572929. |

Although I don't wear mine, I've never really seen the justification for the exemption. |

Without knowing the exact circumstances of the side on collision it might be a little premature to sugest or imply that a seat belt may have made a difference? Regards JD |

Couple of our drivers have had fares grab the seatbelt from behind them and kind of try and choke them with it. Maybe this is the reason we don't have to wear them. |

but if they had the intention to cause harm to the driver, they would have done something else. if the driver was not belted up they could still use the loose strap around the drivers neck. |

So do I all the time, with a car full of 8 air bags and seat belt pre tensioners you would be a fool not to wear your seat belts, with no seat belt on the airbags will do you harm, in an accident the pre tensioners pull you into position ready for you to contact the airbags at the right time in the right position. even at low speeds of impact around 5mph all passenger are told get the belts on before we set off as I want to live another day, no belts, no set off. or get out, end of story. |

Now I think of it, I see more and more PH/taxi drivers with their seat belts on when they don't need to.
Perhaps sense is finally breaking out.

I think the rationale was the same as for delivery drivers - ie to have to put them on and off all the time would be a bit much. But you can easily go a few hours without getting out of a taxi (especially if you're a London one  ), so the comparison with a delivery driver doesn't really hold. I think the delivery driver has to be stopping every couple of hundred yards or so.
