In respect of the private hire contract at Edinburgh Airport can anyone tell me if it is common practice for Private hire vehicles to pick up passengers at Airport without first being pre-booked? Do they rank up in view of the public and wait for custom the same as a hackney carriage? Regards JD |

At the airport there is a special fenced off 'compound' where the PHC cars wait for their jobs - their 'rank'. In order to get into this compound they must first swipe a card to open the barrier. This then communicates with a computer in a marshall's office which in turn shows which cars are in the 'rank'. As the fares come into the office they are asked where they are going and issued with a ticket bearing the number of the next car. That car is removed from the screen and so it goes on. This seems to constitute a pre-booking in the eyes of BAA and CEC. |

Thank you for the accurate breakdown of events. I appreciate it. Regards JD |
