Price competition is more problematic for fares leaving the airport, which is why the airport has set flat rates for taxi travel. However, aldermen could require companies to provide rate cards on site. The airport could display the cards in a conspicuous spot, and cabbies would have to keep cards on hand. Fares to the airport don’t need to be regulated, as people can call around to find the best rates.

Even if aldermen keep set fares for taxis traveling from the airport, they need to let cab companies compete on price within the city. In the past, it may have seemed logical for the city to set cab fares. But today there is no justification for government to mandate those prices.

Typical liberal economics dogma from the kind of people who think that the market is the answer to everyone.

So you can display tariff cards so that customers can compare prices?

So someone arrives at the airport, doesn't know how far they are travelling, and hast to look at several different tariff cards to find the cheapest price? Even if they could do the math, it would take ages. Non-starter.

Another scenario - hailing down in the street - is the taxi going to hang around while the customer works out the fare? If they don't like it, will they risk waiting for the next taxi in the hope that it's cheaper?
