Taxi drivers in Ilkeston and Long Eaton could be banned from wearing T-shirts or jeans.

Firms could also be forced to paint their taxis silver, with a possible ban on vehicles over five years old.

The new rules are being considered by Erewash Borough Council, which wants to improve taxi standards.

If approved, the changes could be in place as early as January.

But some firms feel they have not been given enough time to prepare for the changes.

It can cost up to £1,000 to paint a cab.

"I'm 63 and I can't afford to pay £50,000 to change my cabs," said Fred Richardson, from Albany Taxis, Ilkeston. "These changes will put me out of business."

Taxi firms will meet with the council on November 3 to discuss the plans.

Would this five year ban apply to current vehicles? Or vehicles that are to be licensed for the first time?

I'm not sure if there has ever been a court case stipulating what a person cannot wear? It should be remembered that the council don't employ Taxi drivers they only issue them with a license. Every condition appertaining to a license has to be reasonable. Telling a person what they cannot wear as against telling them they have to be clean and presentable are two different issues. I would have thought a person can be clean and presentable in a T shirt but perhaps this is a case for the courts to decide.

The cabbies of long eaton should ask the NTA to intervene? They like to think they represent the taxi trade, here's a good opportunity for them to prove that they are not just a one trick pony.

But if your ride out of a GNER rank, GNER don't employ taxi drivers but under GNER taxi driver conditions they tell you what you can and can't wear, ties, must be worn, no regimental ones, but you can have a GNER motif tie free, the pullover must be a v neck so they can see the tie, no headwear except "flat caps" [whippet type], shoes not boots
One driver refused entry with doctors note exempting him from wearing a shirt with collar causing him medical condition to his neck, he can only wear T shirt, but this may go to court

GNER cannot tell a cab driver what to wear, what they are actually doing is stipulating a condition for obtaining a permit to ply for hire on their property.

I think such a condition is just plain daft. I would ask the council to define jeans and define t-shirts.

I would also ask the council if they know something called the Human Rights Act, and the freedom of expression bit. I would also visit a few committee meetings and see how scruffy councillors are.

Now having good quality drivers and vehicles is a very good thing, but telling a self-employed person what they can ware, and what they can't, is not something councils should be doing.

In North Korea maybe, but in that manor, I don't think so.

I think that comes under the same heading as a company dress code.

Where that differs from a council one is that under a company one if you don't like it you can work elsewhere. Under a council one, you can't unless you change manors.

I thought that London cabbie's dress code was T-shirts and jeans, and the baggier the bum, the better.

I was off the opinion that London black cab drivers didn't wear anything on their bottom half. I mean why should they when they never get out of their cars to help out customers.
