Do any of you think that there could ever be a national one licence fee for the UK and a set tariff, I think it could happen in the future, Just think all drivers pay £10.00 for a 3 year badge, all operators pay £150.00 for the test and plate, Would it work????? possibly but the tariff would need to be ironed out to take into account the regional differences in wages, and we would need government help in getting a fuel rebate (yes pigs can fly if you kick them hard enough) |

It's bound to happen. If in 2 or 3 years time a license issued in one part of europe will be valid throughout all of europe then requirements will have to be standardised and so will costs. If not everyone will go for the cheapest and least regulated issuing authority. I give it 10 years before license requirements and fees are standardised. With regards to tarriffs, the sooner the local market dictates prices rather than a regulatory authority the better. Kevin http://www.monmouthtaxis.co.uk |

C) Not in a Hundred years. D) The local market does dictate. Ever heard of a LA who has imposed a fare increase unasked? |

I think the problem is do we set the rate at the lowest or the highest current fees. Also some councils are one man and a dog, so they would never be able to do the same as councils with 1000s of cars. But really you're right it should be the same, as we are all meant to be treated the same. But hey, this is the taxi/PH trade and precious little is fair in that.

Well it's all happening in Ireland, so why not here? And with one of the main advocates of the Irish taxi tsar now at the helm of the OFT, it certainly means that the OFT can hardly ignore the issue if they ever revisit the UK taxi market in any comprehensive manner. But it would depend on new legislation, and that could be a couple of years, ten years, decades or never. But I can't see any new legislation NOT including root and branch reform, so surely it's a question of when, not if. |
