Does anyone else have to do this?
I am about to renew a vehicle plate and the Council want me to give them the name and address of every person that will drive the vehicle.
With a small fleet of vehicles where any driver can drive any vehicle it seems a bit of an onerous task because with say 10 vehicles and 15 drivers that will require 150 seperate notifications.
Can anyone see why this should be neccesary?

It's not necessary.

I would ask what's the point of this policy?

Do you have to name every mechanic in your area who is also legally allowed to drive your vehicles?

Sounds a tad disproportionate to me.

And, I mean, if you/they just have a list of your drivers then it serves the same purpose as providing the same list for every car, presumably. All they need is a list of your cars, and a list of your drivers, and that serves the same purpose.

I'd guess that, unless they're just being awkward, they're just wanting to make sure cars are linked to particular drivers if there's an incident. But if any driver can potentially drive any car then providing one list of cars and one list of drivers serves the same purpose.

And if there is an incident, no doubt you'll have a record of who's driving the car at the time anyway.

Ask them to explain precisely what the purpose of the requirement is, and how precisely the requirement will achieve that purpose :?

I have asked. Never thought about the mechanics, I will see what they come back with and if I don't like it I will mention mechanics.

What happens if a new driver joins your firm?

Do you have to send a new list to the council?

we were always asked to name the drivers who would be driving it. It was so they could cross check that the driver was licensed.

Not sure it's rocket science as to why the council wants the information, it's just I'm not sure they are justified in requesting owners tell them everyone who is allowed to drive their vehicles.

I think I would be inclined to ask the council for a printout of every licensed driver in the area, and then send it back to them in answer to their request.

This is a requirement of the 77 Act, isn't it?

What is the 77 act. I am aware of the 1847 Town and Police clauses act and the 1976 Miscellaneous provisions act.

Minibus act 1977 ? although I don't quite see how that would apply here.

1977 minibus act? That's a new one on me! Minbuses with more than 8 passenger seats come under PSV licencing, not the town Police Clauses act if used to carry passengers for hire and reward.

The registered keeper should always have a record of who was driving what and when, ideal if the car is clocked speeding and the RK is issued a s172 notice asking for the driver details.
