Been told that since August I need to show, for a PH medical, my own medical records from my GP, is that correct?

What do you mean by "show"?
Our medical has needed to be done by a GP with full access to our medical records for years. However our medical form has recently changed and is now 22 pages long and we can go to any GP that we choose but if the do not have access to our medical record directly we have to get our own doctor to print off our full medical history and take that along to the medical.
The price at my doctor has gone up from £60.00 last time to £128.00 for the new form and we have to pay extra to an optician for the eye test part.

I have been booked to D4drivers the last 2 years, not sure they ask this, just requested access

I am struggling to see how a taxi/PH medical can be done properly without access to your GP records.

thats not what i said

PREVIOUSLY the form requested I GRANTED access to me GP medical records

Now it says I must TAKE (all 20 pages) with me TO the medical


for 20 years its been blood pressure, eye sight, and questions

I've needed annual medical exam for my PCV licence for the last 7 years. I use a private doctor in ashford who charges £60 in cash to do the exam and fill in the form. My licence expired in early March, I got the medical a few weeks before that and sent it all to the DVLA. I'm still waiting for my licence to come back!!
I've called DVLA a couple of times who say that I can continue driving PCV on a Section 88 exemption which means that as long as they've got my renewal in hand. They've written to a specialist who undertook a series of tests on me about 5 years ago and hasn't seen me since! Quite why they decided to do that is a mystery. The problem is if I want to drive for someone else, I can't, because I can't produce a valid licence.

But I'm mystified as to why a taxi/ph driver has to take 20 pages of doctors notes along to carry on driving. I got a copy of my medical notes earlier this year, it's like a volume of the Encyclopaedia Britannia!! My private doctor will never have time to read through that lot. My GP refuses to do driving licence medicals or to reply to the DVLA. Oh well...Thank goodness I stopped being a ph driver!

Not 100% sure but there's a subtle difference between (some) council HC/PH and PCV/LGV medicals.

Council HC/PH - the good doctor decides your fitness to drive
PCV/LGV - DVLA decides your fitness to drive, based on the medical info from the good doctor (D4 form)

I'm reading between the lines of this. But I can't see a difference between access granted/printed copy for medical notes - the good doctor sees the same thing in either way. Something to do with cost/convenience? Just their costs and convenience, obviously.

On a related theme, I nearly missed the deadline of my second PCV renewal (from age 45, then every 5 years). DVLA sets the 5 year clock by the renewal date, not by age. I'd done the first one early - noticed it was about to lapse just in time.

GB driver licensing
Licensing and licence groups
The GB medical standards for driver licensing refer to Group 1 and Group 2 licence holders:

Group 1 includes cars and motorcycles

Group 2 includes large lorries (category C) and buses (category D)

In most cases, the medical standards for Group 2 drivers are substantially higher than for Group 1 drivers. This is because of the size and weight of the vehicle and the length of time an occupational driver typically spends at the wheel.

Drivers who were awarded a Group 1 category B (motor car) licence before 1 January 1997 have additional entitlement to categories C1 (medium-sized lorries, 3.5t to 7.5t) and D1 (minibuses, 9 to 16 seats, not for hire or reward). Drivers with this entitlement retain it only until their licence expires or it is revoked for medical reasons. On subsequent renewal or reapplication, the higher medical standards applicable to Group 2 will apply.

Under certain circumstances, volunteer drivers may drive a minibus of up to 16 seats without category D1 entitlement. DVLA outlines the rules for such circumstances on the GOV.UK website (see Driving a minibus).
