Mobile booking offices

A chap has e-mailed info@ asking about booking offices.

I wonder if you can point me direction. I’m looking for any information concerning the setting up of “mobile booking stations “ by Private hire companies.

Do you know if such stations have been set up anywhere in the country. Do they flout any of the licensing rules or regulations

I am particularly concerned about the “touting” for business issue.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

The definition of a "Mobile booking office" in my dictionary is, ANY PRIVATE HIRE VEHICLE.

The picture displayed in PHM is promotional before anyone notices that it is parked on double yellow lines. This bus will be mobilised for the very first time this weekend, it will move around Cardiff to the busy spots and park at bus stops.

There is a huge legal problem about parking at bus stops because even buses can't overstay their allotted time and park indefinitely at a bus stop, it is called illegally plying for hire and is well documented in the 1985 Transport act. Besides that, it is an immediate offence for any vehicle to park at a recognised marked bus stop. So the gentleman concerned might have a major problem in finding a place to park? Needless to say, who is going to enforce the law? Especially when most people are ignorant of the law.

I've been in touch with Cardiff and they say the policing of this vehicle parked at bus stops is down to the police. SGT Dave Greaves of the TASC unit has informed me that each case of illegal parking will be dealt with on its own merits.

If anyone in Cardiff wishes to contact Sgt Dave Greaves they can do so by phoning Cardiff

029 20 222 111 ask for Dave Greaves Cardiff central TASC unit.

Those in Cardiff who have reservations about the activities of this vehicle parking at bus stops should contact the local passenger transport authority and ask them what they intend to do about this vehicle parking at bus stops? For those with a more cavalier attitude you might wish to take photos or a video of the offending vehicle and bring forward a private prosecution for illegally parking at a bus stop. There may be other laws being broken but I don't have the time to research that right now. If the hackney trade in Cardiff and the rest of the UK are remotely concerned about what's going on down there then they better get their finger out and do something about it.

They don't have jack to do with what's happening in Cardiff.

As long as the booking is taken at the office, which it is via one of those Autobook things, then everything is ok in respect of taxi and PH law.

The only thing which could prove iffy is the bus laws, and how long a bus can stop.

On the night in question (thursday 8/9/05 the mobil office was surrounded by HC cars protesting, also present were the HC Inspectors, they were all informed by the police that the vehicle was parked illegally and will have to move).
Incidentally in Cardiff all bus stops and bus laybys in the city centre become HC ranks after 11PM, so if they wish to park in a bus layby or bus stop they are parked illegally and will be moved by the police.
I believe JD it was one of your posts that displayed the legal point that it is illegal for any PH vehicle to park in view of the public with the intent to attract customers.

So what was the end result? Did they move it? or are they re-siteing it to a less controversial location?

Did the PH cars park up next to it waiting on a fare? or carry on as normal?

The end result till now is that they had to close the MO and try and meet with council. I assume to try again in the future. (who knows)
