Some useless information about the DfT as if you didn't already know?

Organisation.

The Department of Transport consists of a number of groups, as described below.


* (1) Railways, which includes divisions dealing with, inter alia, finance, corporate affairs and safety; international railways; the Channel Tunnel rail link; and railway economics.

* (2) Roads, Local Transport and Transport Policy, which includes divisions dealing with highways; buses and London Transport; taxis and London projects; local transport policy; traffic policy; driver information and traffic management; road and vehicle safety; and freight and road haulage.

* (3) Aviation, Shipping and International Directorate, containing divisions dealing with shipping policy; investigation of marine accidents; ports; civil aviation; international aviation; and the investigation of air accidents.

* (4) Central Services, consisting of the Directorate of Personnel Management; the Central Services Directorate; the Chief Scientist's Unit; the Executive Agencies Directorate; the Mobility Unit; and the Transport Security division.

The department also has legal and information divisions.The department has eight executive agencies: the Coastguard Agency; the Driving Standards Agency; the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency; the Highways Agency; the Marine Safety Agency; the Transport Research Laboratory, the Vehicle Certification Agency; the Vehicle Inspectorate.

Central Government

Numerous functions of the Secretary of State and Ministers of the Crown have been transferred to the National Assembly for Wales: see the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order 1999.

The Department of Transport

The Department of Transport is merged as from 16 June 1997 with the Department of the Environment, forming the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions: Department of the Environment Press Release 216, 11 June 1997; Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions Order 1997, SI 1997/2971.The Secretaries of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions and for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Order 2001, SI 2001/2568, transfers certain functions from the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions to the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions.
