Taxi Driver Online

Hi everybody, new here & hoping to understand a bit better how to do the job legally before I bite off more than i can chew.

like many others I guess, I want to do a bit of "airport" work to subsidise my very flexible main "job" & have spoken to my local authority, got the forms & done the CRB checks.

Now the problem, the lady I have seen at the council appears pretty clueless & I thought it might be wise to check here (most of you obviously know more than her).

Can i ask someone that knows, to advise me on the following ?

For airport work I need a PH licence and the vehicle will need to be PH plated

Does this mean I can place adverts & BOOK jobs. I believe I can not tout for work in the vehicle itself, but may have a small sign on it with my number.

As i am an owner driver, once I have my drivers licensing sorted, can i apply for ME to also be the holder of the operators license (dizzy woman told me I can't but when questioned she said I MUST be !!)

She has told me i need to take a driving assesment with the council & i have no worries about this, but she keeps asking "which route I want" Is this right ?? I don't want to do local A > B work, i want to do didstance airport work so really my local knowledge is irrelevant (but i know my area well so no big deal)

The vehilce i want to use is a 6 seater, I was thinking of also getting a large saloon car as an extra / instead of type vehicle (need a runabout anyway), do I have to plate this one for PH as well, I keep reading about an exemption but I understand little.

Insurance, any suggestions on what I might pay. Full ncd on a car that i no longer need, over 40 so not a youngster, vehicle of maybe £6000 value

You can apply for an operators license before you gain your PH driver's license. As long as you live in the area you wish to be licensed by.

Once you have that you can advertise as much as you like, and book as many jobs as you like. It's just that you can't do the work unless you are licensed.

You will have to meet the same criteria as the folks doing the local A - B work. As for the route, just ask her for the easiest one.

Ignore the exemption, cos soon it will be no-more.

Whatever car you use for PH work needs to be licensed as a PH.

Take an afternoon off and ring the lot. That could save you many 100s of pounds.

And dont buy a 7 seater until you know they'll licence it for 6! Most dont!

Would anybody elaborate on that, it's a bit of a concern because I knew exactly what I wanted to use for the job.

Perhaps we could start a sweepstake for the cost of insurance.

I will start at £2200 a year fully comp.

The other thing to check, if your using a seven seater is whether or not you are allowed to draw a trailer or have a top box fitted.......................... as I assume the vehicle you have in mind will not carry 6 people AND their luggage.

FREAKIE - Forget about the licensing issues. Just you get your car and get on with your airports. When the LA catch up with you, say you are running a 'members' club'. I wonder what their answer will be...
