Why do taxi drivers have to take these new tests, but not private hire?

Do private hire drivers not have to know the way now then?

I suppose the way they look at it is that as PH bookings are meant to be in advance, PH can always look up where they are going.

As opposed to the taxi chaps who pick up without knowing a destination.

Private hire are licensed to make sure the cars are safe and the drivers are not rapists ect.

this is why councils allow taxis in areas and bus lanes but not private hire.

no private hire do not have to know the way ,as a choice is made to book them where as you can be flagged anywhere.

can I respectfully suggest if you anker to be one of them that you go and join them?

Funny then that they are not being tested, but prospective taxi drivers are.

Clearly PH don't need to be tested, but the council isn't so confident in the taxi trade.

More likely the council realise that trying to get ph to do the tests is a waste of time.
If they want to drive taxis then they should do it. But if they don't then they shouldn't have too.

The reason PH drivers do not have to take the test is due to the fact in Scotland L.A.'s only have the power to issue tests for Taxi drivers

Anyway, were you unhappy when Renfrewshire Council introduced the following ;

Age restrictions - 5yr saloon cars (PH only), 8yr W.A.V (Taxi & PH)
Dress Code - Plain shirt & tie, plain trousers, black dress shoes
Vehicle Colour - Taxis white, PH any except white
No advertising on vehicles
No privacy glass
Exterior plates

Get a Life,in all walks of life restrictions are in place.
Rather see a nice clean taxi,with a nice clean driver,than a load of crap,
regarding both.
It is a business you are running,so invest in it and yourself.

I can understand, to a degree, why you are fed up, but would you prefer;

No age restrictions i.e. license a cortina,
No dress code i.e. scruffy buggers are us,
Any vehicle colour i.e. two tone with different colour panels following a RTA,
Loads of advertising and stickers,
Blacked out windows, to help out the likes of the scum from Manchester,
Interior plates that no-one can check.

It might seem that your manor have gone over the top, but I can assure you that there are many taxi/PH drivers that would love to see their manors have those sort of standards.

And then we can all be rid of the scum and the dregs.

Cureently working in the cab trade here we have (that i no about) 2 ex drink drivers, 2 lads who have lost there license before because of too many points, a lad who went to prison for clocking cars, a lad who went to prison for non payment of maintanace.
And next week we have two in crown court for fighting.
Oh and the drug smoking PH.

come on C Gull, some deserve a seccond chance,
giving a license to a sex offender is different.

I understand some of the points made regarding the license conditions we have here but if L.A.'s are allowed to introduce such measures ther should be national standards. I could move a few miles away to a neighbouring L.A. & operate without any of the previously mentioned conditions, that's not fair.

I would like to tackle the conditions head on

Age restrictions; The competion, ie. buses, can be any age, in fact Renfrewshire Council use the service of buses up to 25yrs old to transport school children

Dress code; Drivers are self-employed, what right do L.A.'s have to instruct them how to dress. The fact they they issue the license is no excuse, window cleaners & street traders aren't told how to dress

Vehicle colour; Surely a large sign on the roof saying TAXI is enough to stop any confusion between P.H. & Taxis

Advertising; Buses have advertising why can't we ?

Privacy glass; Unlicensed limousines freely operate in this area, what about them ?

Plates; Why should drivers have to mutilate their cars, what's wrong with plates in the back window (East Dumbartonshire) or a small plate tied to the front grill ?

with regard to age of vehicle, there is a government circular that says councils should disregard age its condition that matters

with regard to adverts if you want these challenge your council you may win.

with regard to livery I disagree with you.

with regard to dress code this has nothing to do with councils, they cannot even endorce it on thier own employees

Two of my pet hates in one here. Limos are the scourge of our 'trade'. They are un-safe and un-licensed, regrettably it will take a multiply death RTA, for the gov to take action.

As for heavily tinted glass, I've never really understood why we need it. What is there to hide?
