Alright guys. Cracking site for info but I don't post much as I'm clueless. Waiting on another date for my glasgow knowledge test with Glasgow CC and i've also applied for a PH license. I applied last week 01/05/07. How long does this usually take to come through-on average?

And how do I go about hiring a radio/car from a PH firm? My local is Mac Cabs in the east end but i dont want to phone them like a clueless dunce and ask loads of daft questions, so I've came here first!

I know the answers to these will vary greatly, its just so i can get a broad idea of where I'm going.

Is your pay-in paid in a week or fortnight advance?

Does the car come with insurance for any driver over 25 or do i need to get my own sorted?

Is there a minimum term you must hire the car from the PH firm? 12 months ect?

Any help in this directoin will be greatly appreciated as i'm dying to get on the road asap rather than be stuck in a office.

I think the best bet is for you to ring a few of the bigger firms and speak to some of the drivers.

The questions you ask are the type of things that vary from office to office, so unless someone from that office happens to be reading then you won't get a proper answer.

But you seem to be sufficiently clued up that you can contact offices without looking clueless and will be asking the right questions - after all, if you know all the answers then they'll wonder where you got them from.

In general you are as good as your week . Car rental varies slightly usually abt 100 quid for Skoda Octavia and 80 quid for radio a week 24/7 - (can be slightly more or less ) You will probaly find that if you phone your local PH they will put you on to someone who rents out vehicles or the company itself usually does it -and to my knowledge they sort out insurance for you .
If you decide walk away from PH all you should do is hand back radio and car - not normal practice for any minimum contracts etc .
In regards to getting badge thru if memory serves correct it can be abt amonth and a half

you can hire the car as long as you like but if you leave give him notice. the company should sort out your insurance thats why you pay extra here in glasgow i charge £120 for my car you getting it 24 hours and you drive it in to my machanic once a week to check on it.In the past ive had drivers sieze engines not checking oil.[ DIPSTICKS ] As clyde says depends on company who you work for one company who i know charge £70 for full time and its an open system, but some are closed systems and you need to stay out and finish your shift. And it varies on what shift you doing in my hacs mine are all double shifted over glasgow. When will you pass you knowledge might be able to get you a shift not sure looking for some plates just now or maybe more private hire but i have a few guys waiting for months.

£150 a week for the car - including insurance ect.

The car is yours 24/7 and the pay-in is weekly on a monday. The guy I spoke to was a good help and basically said he can have me out driving the day I get my badge! Which I think is brilliant. So I'm a kid waiting for santa at the moment waiting for my badge.I've got my knowledge test on the 22nd so I'm studying like a maniac for that aswell so it will always give me the option of being able to drive a Hackney or a PH.

I also spoke my taxi driver last night (As I was out on the [edited by admin]) who was the same age as me-25. He verified what the PH company had said about being out in the car the day you get your badge. This driver also said he only works till he makes his target then goes home. Which was £100. some days he is home for 3pm other days midnight.


I got a tomtom 700 aswell today just as a backup so I won't look like a complete newie when asked for a street I don't know!

hopefully as the days go on I'll pick up more about the taxi game and be able to post something useful for a change!

In addition to the above, ignore the never judge a book by its cover saying. If it dont look right, it dont talk right and it dont walk right - trust me it aint. In this case judging a book by its cover will keep you out of trouble a lot more than being in it. good luck.

And always keep a tester of aftershave in the car. If someone gets in and stinks put a wee bit of the aftershave on back of your hand (between thumb and forefinger) and you should get to the drop off without boaking. Absolutely essential here in Paisley

I've marked off 8 weeks from the date of my application(8 weeks takes me to 28th of June) for a PH license on a calender and I'm marking it off day at a time. thats how eager i am to get driving! I'm praying that the 6 week mark is a good time for me rather than 8-12 weeks!!
