JMB Consulting has been commissioned to undertake a review into the Taxi transport habits of the North East General public. I've been informed by JMB that the Study might commence in September or soon afterwards. The five NE authorities subject to the survey are Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, South Tyneside and North Tyneside. This survey is not a substitute for unmet demand surveys but on reflection and far be it from me to put ideas into other peoples heads, I was wondering if any authority or Transport consultants had ever thought of getting their act together and devising a plan to survey multiple adjoining areas at the same time, instead of surveying each area independently? Would that be beneficial? Perhaps, perhaps not? I suppose most readers on TDO will be wondering what's behind the reasoning for this study or survey whatever you wan't to call it? I can tell you that the study was prompted by the "The Tyne and Wear Local Transport Plan Team" so we can assume that the study is part of the local Government transport plans or is it? I understand the prime mover for this Taxi survey came from Mr Alan Fiddler Secretary of the North Tyneside Taxi association. JMB says the survey will mainly consist of a public attitude questionnaire directed at public transport use or the lack of it, its availability and satisfaction rates? Regards JD |

Don't local authorities, or at least county councils and unitary authorities, have to review transport every 5 years for their transport/local plans? Or maybe it's seen as a way of sorting the Berwick issue.

JMP STUDY OF TYNE AND WEAR TAXI AND PRIVATE HIRE SERVICES WILL MOULD FUTURE POLICY The increasing important role that taxis and private hire vehicles can play in improving accessibility in Tyne and Wear is being studied by JMP Consulting with a view to influencing policies on taxi provision. The Tyne and Wear Local Transport Plan Team has commissioned JMP to examine the contribution made by taxis and private hire services to public transport in the region. The five districts of Tyne and Wear - South Tyneside, North Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland and Newcastle Upon Tyne - will be researched for a wide range of quantitative data on key aspects of taxi provision. JMP will collect information from a variety of sources, namely the local authorities, the operators, taxi and private hire drivers and the public. This will enable them to build a holistic view of current taxi and private hire resources across the five districts, the role taxis and private hire vehicles play in the community, the unique service that they can offer and whether current resources are satisfying the public demand placed upon them. This information will generate a picture of how taxi and private hire services currently fit into the pattern of public transport provision and what can be done to increase their role in future public transport strategies. An audit of taxi facilities, including safety and security of drivers and passengers, will also be carried out as part of the study. I think it's an attempt to do something right in relation to taxi/PH input into LTPs. |

I wonder if JMB will be offerring up a justification for quotas in their taxi/PH part of the LTP. As the DfT have requested.
