We have no rank in our villlage, the nearest one is in another small town some 5 miles away. We did use to have one about 30 years ago. What would be the best way to start the ball rolling to get a rank in the village near to shops/doctors etc. |

Speak to your local councillor. And/or as the Captain said write to the licensing/highways departments. |

What would be the best way to start the ball rolling to get a rank in the village near to shops/doctors etc. Firstly, check out if the rank you had in your village 30 years ago was ever rescinded, or whether the council never re-painted the road markings for the rank & it died a natural death. If it was never rescinded, it might be easier to re-instate the old one, provided it is in a location that would be beneficial to the cab trade. Or you could do what one of our guys did about 20 years ago. He borrowed a van on a Sunday morning, put on a brown work-coat, had prepared some templates out of plywood, bought some heavy duty yellow paint & painted a rank out in a side street, & no one was the wiser. It lasted about 10 years & no one said a dicky-bird. |

DON'T contact your council. FIRST contact your local taxi operator and discuss with them the need for a rank.Once residents, businesses and taxi operators have agreed the location and size for a rank THEN apply to your local to install one, quoting the agreement you all have jointly made. If you contact your council first, the rank will be in the wrong location for either passengers or taxi drivers or, most probably, both. I speak from experience with Transport for (?) London. |

No I'm not! Both the public and taxi trade want a rank that's conveniently located to both. Leave it to the council and you'll get neither. Agree a location first, then TELL the council where both parties want their rank. |

CC Due to constant harassment from our traffic wardens I did that 18 years ago on a busy Friday night, I marked out a six car bay and managed to get the words taxis only, painted twice before the old bill decided to grab the fully loaded brush off me and got covered in yellow emulsion. there was a crowed of about 150 cheering when this happened. The next day the council came and started to burn it off they had been told it was gloss so I told them they only needed a bucket of water. I was given a £80 cleaning bill for my effort but the best thing was 3 months later the council came and put the first rank in the borders exactly where I had put it even line for line. Oh the charge was painting the queens highway
