When a customer pre books a private hire vehicle, does does the operator have to specify a particular vehicle for that job or could they give that customer a reference number, and get in the next car that pulls up, after giving the driver the reference number for there booking or would the driver need to also need to know customers name and destination. This would take place in a busy city centre were the company take a large amount of bookings from the same pick up point, All the vehicles would only be picking up customers that have actually pre booked a PHV through the company I have seen that Norwich City Council say 7. Check the driver has your name and/or booking reference and destination when he arrives. Verify that the phone number on his vehicle matches the one you dialled and that the driver has official identification with his photograph on it. this is the link to it as well http://www.norwich.gov.uk/webapps/news/ ... p?cid=4611 |

That should answer your question. |

I suppose it depends on what conditions your council has set. For checking purposes it's good practice IMO that as much detail is logged as possible including full driver and customer details. But there are times when ops don't get a name of a customer i.e. table 4 at the Indian or see staff at the Dog and Duck. Or in multi car bookings, booked under the name of one person. As for giving drivers tickets or reference numbers, isn't that what everyone used before radios came along? |

so you can use a reference number instead of a customer name, as long as they ring and pre book, so what about using the same ref number for every customer from the same pick up point? |

I think if they use the same reference number from the same spot, they are bordering on the iffy side of the trade. |
