| Post subject: | Number plates |
It has been suggested by a licensing officer that only long rectangular number(registration) plates are legal on UK vehicles. He also says that the almost square ones with an upper and lower line of type are legal on imported vehicles but not on UK cars. Many cabs mount their plate alongside a replacement "almost square" reg plate. Is this legal or is the hair splitter correct? Any help gratefully rcvd.

Don't know the law chapter and verse, but I did think hear that square plates are only allowed on a vehicle if there's no alternative, for example that ugly Alfa Romeo with the pointed bumper thingy. |

Actually the pics of the Alfie that I found on Parker's all have rectangular plates, although they are offset. This is what I meant, on an Evo, although they don't look like UK plates, but I certainly see some on the road with similar plates. Evo photo |

The Vito London taxi has a square number plate and you can probably find some pictures to confirm this on the net. My limos have square plates and I have received tickets from TFL for congestion charge even though the charge had been paid and a speeding ticket from a gatso camera taken from behind. |

Thanks to all who have posted. I've read the SI2001/561 and there is no mention of any restriction on the square/rectangle choice for your vehicle. they are both shown in Schedule 3. Excellent

its a load of waffle , your number plate should not be liscensing issue, also square plates are ok and can be read otherwise motorbikes would not have them |

i should think if it goes through an mot and you dont get pulled by the rozzers because of it, i dont think it should have anything to do with licencing. |

I now know what the problem was. Some eagle eyed councillor spotted a cab with a motorcycle sized plate and complained to Licensing officers, then duff gen was forthcoming from DVLA but all sorted now though M/C sized plates are not acceptable cos it's an MOT failure. Merry Xmas to all my readers!
