We had a nice chat with a chap from Mercury at the taxi show today. I couldn't get him to say a bad word about you Nidge even though it was clear that he knew who you were. he gave us a demonstration of Mercury 2 it seems to be an all singing and all dancing system that will do everything that anyone wants it to do and possibly more besides. However both my son and I said that it seemed to be over complicated.

whats it cost?

why is my base short of PDA's? are PDA's bought or rented?

I didn't ask the price. An android phone can be used as a PDA on some systems.

When we got our first PDA's we were told that if they were lost or stolen we'd have to cover the £600 replacement fee. I asked why £600 when I had the exact same model from PCWorld for £200 ? 'That's how much we're charged for them, it's the cost of the installed software apparantely' the office told me. #-o

It won't do everything that anyone wants and your right it is over complicated. It's OK showing people some software working pre installed on a PDA and a computer, get it out in the field and it'll soon feck up.

I don't care what they had to say about me, I can lay straight in bed at night.

That's just it Nidge he didn't say a word. I tried to bait him but he wasn't taking it. He just looked me in the eye and smiled. That was more disappointing that the product.

We are in the process of swapping from smart to android now (due to windows xp loosing its support ). And we can buy them of mercury at £150 per unit with craddle/charger and ready to go or we can lease 13 units at a cost of £1.30 per unit per week so roughly £20 quid a week and there upgraded every 2 to 3 years. Grandad what system do yous use ?.

Until very recently we have been using pen and paper. But we are in the process of evaluating a computerised booking and dispatch system. The Auto dispatch requires the driver to have a device in the car, obviously, but this device can be an android phone that is available from many outlets for around £35.00 and a data package which can be a standard sim with data or, I am told, that I can get a data only sim for around £3.00 per month. At the moment I am using my contract Samsung galaxy S4 mini on my call text and data package. The data limit is 500 meg per month and so far since last Saturday when I turned the system on I have used a little over 7 meg.
