Post subject:  NAVMAN 520
HI ALL JUST BOUGHT THE ABOVE CANT REALLY GET ANY SIGNAL, IS THIS THE NORM OR HAVE I JUST BOUGHT A DOUGH 1.. SHALL I TAKE IT BACK AND GET TOM TOM INSTEAD ANY ADVICE PLEASE

I just bought a TomTom 500 Mr Cockney.

Now in town its diabolical, sending you down one way streets, no lefts no rights etc, but then I don't need it up town!

Out of town its been worth its weight in gold. it took me straight to some obscure address in Bourne End on Friday night, not once did I have to wake the bloke and ask him 'which way next?'

I believe some laminated windscreens block the signal, in which case you will need a plug in outside aerial to boost the signal.

Either that or you've bought a duff one.

i have the tom tom 700 and as greenbadgecabby says it sends you up one way streets etc but out of town its saved my bacon a few times :lol: :lol: :lol:

the good thing with the tom tom is it re plots your route if you are unable to go down the route it has planed or have a diversion in front of you and it also shows the streets you are passing.

well worth the cash and the best on the market in my view

Yes, and it has a village green as well.

Good fare though, the woman, bless her, thought she could get the Milk Train from Paddington. :D

I explained it used the M4 nowadays, not the railway.

Just to put you right on the windscreen issue. The problem with GPS equipment not working through some windscreens is not from the lamination process but conductive coating. The most common problem and worst being from rain sensing windscreens followed by electrically heated ones and finally but to a lessor extent, some tinted screens. If your kit will support an external antenna then use one in the back window as they tend to be standard glass. Not as good as on the roof but at least nobody can nick it! :mrgreen:

I have the ICN610 which is the model before the ICN520.

Mine works really well but you must remember, just as it says on the instructions that your arial needs to have a clear path to the sky IE: no obstructions. I first tried it in my house and it just won't work, even in my kitchen I have to almost have it hanging outside the kitchen window for it to get a signal.

There is talk about the windscreen trouble although I have yet to suffer from this. I drive a MK1 Mondeo with a heated front screen and thought that this would be a major problem but instead I get a really strong signal.

Don't forget though that you are dealing with satalite signals here that are having to break through the earths atmosphere as well as the cloud cover, it isn't like other radio signals that bounce off buildings and the upper atmosphere etc to get to you.

I've notice that sometimes when the weather turns signals to my Navman do sometime get week, sun spots affect it too. Like I said it needs to be free from obstruction, thick dense clouds are one of them.

I just bought the Becker Traffic Assist. Very good piece of kit, worth looking at.
