I thought I'd say hello.I'm not a taxi driver but I do drive a 1993 Lti fairway as my own transport.Don't quite know why but it seemed a good idea at the time.I've started to restore it I really want to get it back to original condition.I hadn't realised the rather agricultural nature of the thing, for me,not doing hundreds of miles it doesn't really matter and it's part of its 'charm' but I've a bit more respect for the professional cabby who had to sit in one of these for hours at a time.
The only down side so far is that everyone and his brother shouts out "Taxi" and grins out of the window as they pull up alongside at traffic lights etc.Still,I've been called much worse.

Maybe sympathy's a more apt word.

Best of luck with your restoration.

The restoration is progressing slowly,I've kept it on the road as much as possible,I use it most days.
So far it's proved reliable and relatively cheap to run. There are a couple of fairways still being used as taxis in my home town (Lowestoft) one has the wood trim on the doors and a sun roof,I think its an up market version of the fairway. It certainly looks rather smart.
The story of my work so far is here.http://www.baconsdozen.co.uk/londontaxi.html
I don't know if the later taxis are better than the fairway to drive etc but I do think it's a misguided policy if they all vanish from Londons streets, like the Routemasters they are part of our heritage.

Very enlightening Bacon, did you make sure that you put some drain holes in the bottom of the doors :?:

Yes I drilled some big holes in the bottom, the seals round the windows look a bit of a lash up i doubt they hold much water back when brand new.
Looks like you don't rate the later versions?.
