Does anybody use a Vauxhall Zafira? If so, what's the fuel consumption like? |

What do you get around town, Grandad? My wife has just bought one on an 08 plate and is getting about 33mpg which is very disappointing compared to my old Vectra with the same engine. Are modern diesels becoming less economical? |

Mine is a 53 plate. I will ask some of the others tonight. There are another 6 drivers in our town who run them. One of them is on LPG but the rest are on diesel. |

I managed to speak to one of the other drivers last night and I have to say that I am not impressed. He says that he has the records from since he bought the car and based on all types of work, distance and local his return is 35.6 MPG. I get more than that from my Galaxy and certainly more than that from my Zafira. |

Thanks for that, Grandad. You've been most helpful and I'm grateful for your efforts. She ain't gonna be happy as she sold a 3.2 V6 Vectra Estate for the Zafira. Although the consumption's better, the higher cost of diesel makes the gain marginal. If anyone else has comments/experience, I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks all. |

Quote: Are modern diesels becoming less economical? Steve I have had diesels for years, family car and for work. At the moment the family car has a 3.0 litre engine and returns a mix of 32/33 mpg around and about, and up to 44 mpg on the run, which if you had the petrol version then you would probably be looking at at least 10 mpg less. My Peugeot 1.9 work vehicle returns just over 32 mpg which with all the starting and stopping and me not being very frugal, is very acceptable. In answer to your question, I believe that they have improved beyond all expectations from what they were initially in acceleration/smell/ and of course in most cases, the return of mpg has always outstripped petrol. For a 1.9 seven seater then it sounds about right - what would be your return for a similar petrol version with seven seats? |

Don't ever buy a Vauxhall Diesel and expect good MPG because it won't happen. Vauxhall are in the mess they are in now because they churn out duff motors. |

The chap who owns the cars I drive has 6 of them. Well, 6 Zafira's that is. 5 are the 1910 CDTi engine and the one I drive on a Saturday is a 54 plate with the old 1998cc DTi motor. Now, on the old DTi, I regularly get 40 mpg. The engine has done 207000 miles and it does run as sweet as a nut and pulls like a train when it gets going. I've been using it for 9 months and am not aware of any problems with it. Rest of the car is a bit of a minger though. The 1.9's though seem constantly having problems. He has 2 down at present. One with DMF/clutch gone and the other with a radiator problem. In the past there have been issues with alternator's and ERG's and water pumps. Personally I wouldn't buy one although my friend still likes them. Apparently alternator failure is a regular thing on these but we have a local chap works from home who rebuilds them for about £70. To buy about £400 I believe. |
