That's a nice looking car.

Any details on availability in UK or prices?

They should start to arrive in March next year, starting at around 16K, you can get the new hatch back VAT free at the moment. or £3500 off if you put in a scrapper

My original plan once the badge comes through is to rent a vehicle from the PH company. Thankfully I have friends who do that already and have steered me clear of the worst offenders who don't care how much you make as long as they make their radio/rental.

Once I have enough banked I plan on putting down a hefty deposit on a car and screwing them down on the best finance deal I can. That way my repayments will be minimal but the car will be paid off before it's been to the moon and back twice AND the main dealer with still give a toss about servicing it. I've heard some horror stories too about cars rented from PH companies more or less falling apart in the street. Makes you wonder what they're doing with the money they're being paid while insisting you use their garage services.

I do like the look of that Skoda, too. I was going to go either Octavia Hatch, Octavia Estate or Passat Hatch but this has made me think. March you say...?

Do you mean estate?

Smart money would but an 08 MK 1 Superb, get a 1.9 TDi though, the 2.0 one has issues with the oil pumps, and the 2.5 unless you do long distance will hurt your wallet, I'm sniffing Madame Mondeo right now.

Crap! No, I meant saloon. Sorry.

I suppose one of the main reasons I fancy the Passat is because I just like the look of them.

You must have read my mind. I drove a van many moons ago and even full the 1.9TD engine managed just fine in economy, power and reliability. Apart from a blown turbo hose, which was traced back to a muppet mechanic, that thing was bulletproof. I think 1.9 is just right for a car too. Much bigger and you're not really using the grunt to do anything beyond lining the pockets of whoever owns your local filling station.

One thing I am keeping a keen eye on is this bio-diesel or LPG idea. I know the conversion costs can be quite lofty but the price of the fuel is buttons.

I have several cars on LPG, it saves me a fortune. Some of the conversions can be a bit tempremental though I have one that doesn't like to run on gas if the journey is stop-start but it is fine on out of town work. It has covered over 170K now. One of my limos was converted at 120K and has now covered 230K. It is not as cheap to run on gas now as it was 5 years ago though. Then gas was around 1/3 of the price of petrol but it is now around 1/2 the price.

I'm watching the prices with quite a keen eye but half the price of petrol is way better than the full price of petrol which, I have to say, is frankly ridiculous. Same goes for diesel too. I'll either be getting an LPG conversion or a bio-diesel one along with a Costco card for all the cooking oil!

The Passat is slightly wider than the superb. The largest in its class if you check out the stats. The superb does look good though.

I think most modern cars do unfortunately. It's been a while since I saw a car with definite edges. They all look like comedy jelly moulds these days.
