clouds and clouds of what looks like black soot, there's black marks all up and down my road.Any sensible suggestions? Thanks.

sounds like your ERG. valve is blocked.. take it for a run in a 70 zone and thrash the tits oot it m8...

Do you by any chance sit stationary with the engine running for long periods of time? I have been told that this can have such an effect on diesel engines.

You need to block your EGR valve. I did, and it cures the soot problem. 10 minute job.

Reading from the replies above I am confused :? One reply says that the EGR is blocked so thrash the engine but another reply says that blocking the EGR will fix it.????????????? confused.com :? :? :?

find a quite road, drop it into 2nd gear or if its auto drop it into low then give it some welly, 5 or 6 miles maybe but watch your rev counter don't go into red, if you have one,
its carboned up, [ soot] from sat ticking over,

Pete, someone told me get it up to about 50mphand stick it in neutral. Sound right to you?

yes rev the arse out of it, you need to get the engine as hot as pos to clear/burn the carbon, but watch the rev counter, you may have a rev counter/govenor that won't let you over rev it

sorry i missed that out, you don't want it in neutral, it gets hotter on load

Did it five or six years ago. Sails through emmissions tests ever since. No need for millers or redex.

i blocked my EGR valve when it was smoking bad, cured it straight away, well worth getting done
