Post subject:  BLOCKING THE EGR VALVE

we're having this done tomorrow, anyone have any experience of this, we have a TX2, 05 plate, smokes like a chuffing chimney, dealer tells us that it's cos we don't cane the engine at high revs, we rather plod along i'm afraid, one of their mechanics mentioned that by blocking the valve, this will cure the problem overnight, and make the engine work that little bit better, your thoughts and comments appreciated please

Bought a brand new Metrocab Auto in 1999. At it's first six monthly test, it chucked out a bucketfull of soot onto the test station floor, and I nearly fainted from shock! Advised to block the gas recycling valve by a "friend" absolutely NOT the tester!! and an instant cure. Goes through emmissions test easy now. Worked for me and my Metro. But don't try to sue me if yours goes wrong, I've got now't.

A tip from an LTI agent in Nottingham (Giaconies), when your on tickover floor the accelerator for 2 seconds then let the peddle come back up, do this 3 times and watch the smoke come out the exhaust.

thanks for the comments guys, we were told to thrash the cabs down the local carriageway in 2nd or 3rd to clear all the deposits out, but altho it does clear it for a while, it soon reappears, was also told about the older metrocabs being done, seems very poor that they've put an EGR valve in to curb emmissions, yet they belch more smoke out than before!! looks like the valve will defo be done, cheers, oh i'll tell ya how it looks after tonight when we get it back

had it done yesterday, drove it during the evening till midnight ( the dark obviously shows up the smoke in others' headlights etc), the result of the EGR being blocked is this................................. NO MORE SMOKING!!!!!! a job well worth rvery penny in my opinion....if yours smokes, get it done!!!!

It also helps if you put decent diesel in, avoid the supermarket diesel go for Esso, BP, Shell or Total.

i have the late model TXII, there is an electrical plug that goes into the Vavle, does this mean it has a sensor and the blocking trick wont work ?

I believe you have to drill a 5mm in the plate to allow the sensor to work.
I just need to track down a plate.

Hi Naz & devilhunter,

You don't need to put a hole in the plate. The connector on the EGR lets the computer know that the little valve inside the EGR is moving up and down - in response to the vacuum pipe that you see next to the connector. Thankfully on the Ford set up it can't tell whether or not any exhaust gas is entering. I've had my EGR blocked off for the last 100,000 miles or so and the emissions are much lower.

Do bear in mind though... Unless you block this off from new, you really need to remove the EGR and Inlet Manifold etc. to thoroughly clean out the old sludge that will be strangling the engine's breathing! It's a very messy job but worth it.
