Blackburn and Darwen taxi fares to rise

FARES for taxis in Blackburn and Darwen are set to rocket by 20 per cent.

Private hire drivers said they had no choice due to the rising cost of fuel and administration fees for the vehicles.

As a result the minimum journey rate will rise from £2.30 to £2.80.

And the rate per mile will increase from £1 to £1.20.

A group of taxi firm bosses had been in talks over the summer and have decided to raise their fares from September 2.

Farooq Khan, owner of Highfield Taxis, Bolton Road, said the rising cost of running the cars was the main driver of their decision.

He said: “We apologise for doing this, but there is nothing we can do.

“Petrol has gone up and vehicle test fees have gone up.

“And the town hall gas put their prices up every year, for things like permits, badges, plates, and booking in fees for vehicles.

“But we’ve informed the council’s licensing department what we’re doing and they have said it’s fine.”

Mr Khan, from the borough’s private hire association, said the private hire firms in the area had not increased their fares since 2002.

The firms raising their fares will be Highfield Taxis, City, Golden Line, Silverline, Arcade, Elite, Metro, Mill Hill, 24/7, R.M.A, Intack, B&B, and Blackburn Cars.

Didn't OFT fine the firms for doing that a few years ago?

That said, how on earth are drivers meant to earn on £1.20 a mile? ](*,)

Will the offices care if the owner drivers are making a living or not?

And how long will it be before one of the above thirteen blinks and drops the fares to the original level to corner the market?
