Cabbie Over Limit Reported By Taxi Driver

4th September 2008

A taxi driver has been banned from the roads for 22 months after he was reported to police by another cabbie.

Graham Brian Wood was spotted driving erratically by a Hackney taxi driver, John Fletcher, who reported Wood to police. Mr Fletcher then followed him from Roose Road to Wood’s home on Dundalk Street, Barrow.

Prosecuting, Mr John Appleby said Wood’s Nissan was first seen by Mr Fletcher at around 1.20am on August 17, swerving across the road.

Mr Appleby said: “Mr Fletcher saw the car stop on Dundalk Street and he stayed at the scene until police arrived. They arrested Mr Wood and took him to Barrow police station.”

When tested by police, 41-year-old Wood provided a breath specimen of 89 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath, more than twice the legallimit.

Mr Appleby said: “He said he spent the day camping near Ulverston. He had been drinking lager and woke up after a sleep, but didn’t know why he drove.”

Ms Rachel Broughton, defending, said Wood, who had no previous convictions, had intended to spend the whole weekend at the campsite.

Ms Broughton said: “He woke up extremely uncomfortable and not enjoying the camping experience whatsoever and it had been a significant time since his last drink. He will be unemployed following this ban, and that will be the greatest punishment upon him.”

Wood, a former volunteer at Citizens Advice Bureau and Mind, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. (02/09)

He was banned for 22 months, fined £150 and was also ordered to pay costs of £60 and a £15 victim surcharge.
