Taxi fares could be set to rise



Taxi fares will rise in the Royal Borough if councillors approve proposals next week.

The minimum fare is set to go up from £2.60 to £3 from April 1, after cabbies pleaded with the council to help them meet spiralling costs.

The rises only affect hackney carriage cabs and not private hire "taxis".

Sabir Hussain, of the Hackney Carriage Association of Maidenhead, said that the recession and rising expenses demanded the shift in fare tariffs. “Our fees have continuously been raised by five per cent every year, while fares have not gone up for two years now,” he said.

The charge for ‘soiling the interior’ of a cab is set to stay at £80. The proposals are due to be presented to councillors at a licensing panel on Tuesday.

Is 2009 really the year to put cab fares up 15%?

I really do give up with this trade......if fares are increased or assessed on an annual basis this kind of thing wouldnt happen, experience tells me very often its the trade itself that doesnt push for the increase.

Also isnt it more advisable to have the fares increased say a couple of months before Xmas? It's busier than January and the public get used to it.

Look, you could agree a formula with the council, and then program the meters to give you, say, a 3% rise year on year on any date of your choosing.

A few years ago a formula was agreed with Edinburgh council, but they never honoured it.

Now we get a 7% rise, 3 years late heading ar*e over tit into a recession.

I suppose there's an argument for fares to be taken out of the councils hands......after all if they're paying for taxis to do social serices work etc aint that a little like asking the wife to do Tesco's pricing policy?

But alot of the social service work is tendered for and has little real relation to metered work. (down here anyway)

The way we're being shafted down here they probably ring PH, Mr Preece is always very obliging.

And efficient too, I understand, damn nice bloke with lots more cash that us poor peeps on TDO, wont have a word said against him or his companies and their fine solicitors.

Cabbies price hike wish refused



Taxi fares will stay as they are after councillors rejected a proposed price hike from cabbies.

Licence fee increases for hackney carriage and private hire taxi drivers were also rejected as the licensing panel looked to support residents and drivers in the difficult economic climate.

A minimum fare increase from £2.60 to £3 for hackney carriage cabs, not private hire taxis, was deemed an unnecessary extra cost, which would turn people away from using taxis, at the meeting last night at Maidenhead Town Hall.

The three hackney carriage zones of Windsor, Maidenhead and an area outside the two town centres, largely based around Ascot station taxi rank, were merged into one today.

With standardised prices across the zones, residents in Ascot will actually benefit from a fare decrease from £3 to £2.60 to come in line with the other zones.

The unitary council in the North East including the English town of Berwick on Tweed, by how much do their various tarrifs vary? And will they all go down to the lowest level too? Could be interesting....

Now why didn't the local trade offer a sensible compromise where the the flag started at £2.80?

That would have left the inner zones with a 7.5% increase, and the lads from the sticks wouldn't have had to suffer a 15% decrease.
