Taxi driver banned after drink-driving
A TAXI driver from Tunbridge Wells has been fined and disqualified from driving after being convicted of drink-driving.
Nicholas Gower, of Tuxford Road, pleaded guilty to the offence at Sevenoaks Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
Prosecuting, James Nichols told the court that police were called to the A21 northbound carriageway in Sevenoaks to a vehicle on fire on December 13.
"A medic stopped to help as Mr Gower had driven the vehicle up the road before stopping again," he said.
"He saw a bottle of whisky in the footwell and suspected him (Gower) of drinking and took the keys from him."
The 44-year-old failed a roadside breathalyser test and was taken to the police station where he produced a reading of 112 micrograms per 100ml of breath.
The legal limit is 35mg.
Defending, Andrew Main said that Gower had drunk a quantity of wine the night before the incident happened.
"There was a problem with his taxi.
"He tried to mend his car in the morning but it was still no good.
"Mr Gower knew a friend who had a taxi for sale.
"He spoke to his friend who said if you want it you will have to get it fairly quick."
He added: "Mr Gower jumped into his car to make this rendezvous.
"He will lose his livelihood."
Chairman of the bench Ted Dodds sentenced Gower to a community order for 100 hours and disqualified him from driving for 24 months.
