A London black cab driver who preyed on more than a dozen vulnerable young women, drugging with them champagne before sexually assaulting them as they lay unconscious in the back of his taxi, a court has heard.

He told them he had won the lottery and invited them to join him in celebration by sharing a glass of champagne, Croydon Crown Court heard.

Unknown to them, each glass was spiked with a drug which saw them drift in and out of consciousness.

With his victims helpless, he pounced, prosecution counsel Johannah Cutts QC told the jury.

She said that the women had unwittingly stepped into his taxi in the belief that they would be safe.

“Mr Worboys’ intent in picking them up in his cab, was, we say, wholly different,” she said. “His primary intent had nothing to do with taking them home.

“His intent we say was wholly sexual in nature. His intent was to ensure that they were completely at his mercy and then to sexually molest them.”

Mr Worboys’ campaign of abuse continued for more than two years from October 2006 to shortly before his arrest in February last year, the court heard.

Miss Cutts said that the women trusted him because he was a London black taxi driver.

“How many times have any of you or those you know used a black cab to get home at night,” she asked the jury.

“How many of you would feel other than safe as you got into the back of the cab?”

Mr Worboys, of Rotherhithe, wore a grey suit, white shirt and black tie as the opening of the eight week trial began.

He is charged with 23 offences, including rape, sexual assault and administering a substance with intent against 14 victims.

He denies all the charges.

Bus drivers in London share a lot in common with the London Minicab trade.

They drive like [edited by admin].

They don’t know where they’re going, even though it’s a set route.

They can't speak English.

They can't read road signs, especially height restrictions.

They cause thousands of accidents every year.

I wonder if they are eligible to join Terry’s mob?

Black cabbie 'sexually assaulted new mother' - little black book


A black cabbie drugged and sexually assaulted a new mother on her first night out since she gave birth, a court heard today.

John Worboys, 51, is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting his female passengers.

The prosecution says the 36-year-old Twickenham woman became the 12th of his 14 victims after picking her up at London Bridge.

The court was told how cops found Worboys’ address book which contained the woman's details and those of several other alleged victims.

The 'ideal target' - Traces of drugs

Traces of Temazepam were found in her body after she woke up dazed and confused in her bathroom - Prosecutor Johannah Cutts QC said:

"Worboys knew that he had a woman alone in his cab who had been drinking and who wanted to travel a little distance.

"She was, from his point of view, an ideal target."

23 alleged offences

The cabbie from Rotherhithe,is standing trial at Croydon Crown Court charged with 23 offences against 14 women between October 2006 and February 2008.

The licensed black cab driver is also up for rape, assault by penetration, five sexual assaults and two attempted sexual assaults at Croydon Crown Court.

Worboys, a cab driver since 1996, denies all charges.

Picked up in West End - date rape drugs

Worboys is said to have picked up women in the West End in the early hours claimed he won thousands on the lottery and invited his passengers to join him in toasting his success.

The prosecution allege the glasses of champagne where spiked with a "cocktail" of "date rape drugs" leaving them which left them helpless and suffering memory loss before driving to secluded areas - subjecting them to sexual assaults.

Women wanted to get home safely

Yesterday the prosecutor said he used his cab to meet young woman who were under the influence of alcohol who "wanted to travel home safely and got into the cab without question". She added:

"Worboys’ intent in picking them up in his cab was, we say, wholly different. His primary purpose had nothing to do with taking them home. His intent was wholly sexually in nature.

"His intent was to ensure they were completely at his mercy and then to sexually molest them.

"Having each girl alone in his cab was a start, but we say this defendant wanted to ensure there would be no struggle, no difficulty in achieving his aim. How did he do that? We say he did it by drugging them."

Eight taxi sex attacks every week

These kinds of sex crimes are associated more with the illegal taxi trade. TfL's 'Safer Travel at Night' scheme helped curb record levels of cab-related sexual violence and robberies - despite these cuts, 104 such offences were committed in 2007.

Eight cab-related sex offences are recorded in London each month.

The most disturbing thing about this case is it only covers 2 of the years this man has been a cabby. Heaven only knows what he may have done before this that he will never be held accountable for. Whilst I appreciate he is innocent until proven guilty IMHO I believe that is only a matter of time.
