Its not only taxi P/H drivers which will have to take these types of courses new PSV drivers since sept 2008 and new HGV drivers after sept 2009 will have to take simialar courses before they can obtain a full license, and exsiting full licence holders will have to do 35 hours of in class training within 5 years to keep there licenses valid so come sept 2013/4 if you havnt done it you are out of a job till you have. Also like the courses being run now, there is no exam you just have to attend it and take notes, you cant fail the courses but have to do it the way they want it done.

Look here http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk/job-roles/qualifications/Taxi+Driver/50056621/EDI+Level+3+NVQ+in+Road+Passenger+Transport+Operations++qualification.seo.aspx

I don't know what course they are running in your neck of the woods but the Btec/VRQ has an exam at the end of it and the NVQ is assessment based

There appears to be pressure by some training companies on local councils, many are incorrectly informed as to the funding aspect of the courses available, many are told that funding will run out by a certain date.

Training is coming.....its a matter of when.

You can add to that Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Liverpool not sure about Ellesmere Port & Neston or Chester. The only way to be certain is to check online or ring and ask them

I had a guy on the Phone trying to sell the Idea of an NVQ to me, he was from northumberland somewhere..said it wouldnt cost me a penny and that all i needed to do was a few hours studying and then have an NVQ team Member along on some of my runs..then Id have an NVQ..is it really that simple?? or are these NVQ trainers just getting handed taxpayers money for a worthless piece of Pap ??

As I dont need an NVQ I said no thanks...besides...Id never let my customers share my vehicles with another Individual they didnt know...the whole thing wid just feck up a few weeks of wage earning fares..no thanks.

I recently put one of those so-called testers in his place as he smiled when mentioning that two Bournemouth cabbies had lost their licenses following them not doing the course.

And he didn't like it. :D

Well done.

You should have asked him which section of the 1995 DDA refers to disabled access in respect of taxis?

when i did my city and guilds [Ham] amatuer radio class 1 exam, the total questions was 80, I asked my experienced tutor instructor what is the pass mark, he said it wasnt known, but it was thought anything over 40% and you will pass

i have also learned that from next year any tradesman, in this case it was a vehicle electrician from a towbar and car audio firm i spoke to, he is already on a course now so he can be allowed to work on dealer warranty vehicles outside the main dealer

as from next year no one outside a vehicle main dealer can touch a vehicle that is on manufactors warranty without having the qualifications of this course, so thats radio fitters, taxi meter fitters, the list goes one

This is the misconception.

The BTEC is not an NVQ, the BTEC is a VRQ and councils and some training companies are putting the two together to get the funding and cabbies into the classroom enviroment.

The councils should be reminded that the funding, as all training funding, is not available for mandatory qualifications.
