Eight women are sexually attacked by minicab drivers, some of them unlicensed, every month in London, according to figures released today.
The Met recorded 93 minicab-related sexual offences in 2008-9, although that was down from 120 the previous year.

The number of women using illegal cabs has also fallen from one in five in 2003 to fewer than one in 20. A new cinema, TV and poster campaign has been launched urging women to use official minicabs or black cabs during the Christmas party season.

Police will also target touting hotspots and illegal cab drivers.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said a significant number of younger women still use illegal cabs. He said: "It is hugely important that everyone takes this message on board - minicabs that haven't been booked are illegal and a threat to your personal safety. Don't take the risk. Save the Cabwise text number, 60835, in your phone and use it."

It is illegal for any minicab to carry out a journey that has not been booked. Police said booking guarantees a trip will be with a licensed driver and a record of your journey is kept.

Steve Burton, of TfL, said: "Only black cabs can be stopped and picked up off the street without being booked."

eusasmiles.zip Yes ,unfortunately getting into a "cab" now-days is a bit of a lottery! and as you rightly say Some assaults are carried out by licensed drivers from either side of the fence.The private hire industry will always advise customers to pre-book with a licensed operator or licensed outlet. Despite the advertising campaign that advises this, people will still get into UNLICENSED vehicle's . eusasmiles.zip

What it tells you is that the LA's of the country who say they cannot refuse a license are talking out the back of their necks. As in any job a person has got to be suitable, unfortunately many are not.

The LA's have caused the problem with their slap dash approach to the job, and it should be firmly put back into their court.

I wish you'd go and give yourself a shake ffs.......either side of the fence equates to a couple of bad eggs on one side and hundreds on the other.

If anyone is to blame for bad or un-licensed drivers in London its the PCO, please don't go around slagging the many thousands of hard working decent licensed mini-cab drivers. Lets clearly note the difference between licensed and unlicensed. :roll:

Only when people get into a Minicab with their non English speaking, topographically clueless drivers with dubious backgrounds.

No, only one from ours in over 20 years, the thousands of other offences are carried out by the wanabee cab drivers from your industry.

Wrong again, 80% of these incidents are carried out by Licensed Minicab drivers.

Use the freedom of information act, we did.

Apart from sexual assaults, we can also add drug dealing / running, human trafficking, handling stolen goods, immigration offences too numerous to list, offensive weapons, assaults a plenty on customers and other road users . . The list goes on.

Just how much scum is it possible to employ within the Minicab trade? :?

You've got duff information there Don, I was employed by the Home Office when I was on The Knowledge.

They are out of this by virtue of the fact they've done nothing. :?

This article is about the eight or so immigrant drivers from the Minicab trade who commit sexual assaults on their passengers every month.

The figures are there from the MPS for anyone who wishes to study them.
