That aside charles.....section 48 (1) (a) (ii) of the 1976 act states;

not of such design and appearance as to lead any person to believe that the vehicle is a hackney carriage;

The vehicles are already licensed as PH in the area.

We too have many rear loaders. This safety issue is just crap.
Most of our ranks have insufficent pavement space for side loaders - one is even on the wrong side of the road. Still some believe this BS.

Wouldn't that also cover saloon being used as PH in an area which allows saloon hacks?

And you have a car with a taxi sign on it. Your point?

A PH can load in areas other than cab ranks?

Can maybe, but I doubt their conditions of license say must.

If anything it could be viewed as being safer loading on a rank as there are umpteen other cabs behind protecting you.

Safer?! I hope you're on one of your wind-ups Sussex?

With far more cabs than rank spaces already (and in many cases, no usable/allowable space to pull in front of the rank in which to load a wheelchair), let's lose another rank space whilst loading too.

But far more importantly, let's have the disabled having to load from the road, instead of the safety of a footpath, having to load at a steeper angle (most likely having to drop down from kerb level) and then, potentially, be seated in a more dangerous position in the event of an accident.

For goodness sake, we should be fighting for raised kerb areas for loading wheelchairs, as many LA's have done for the local buses, not making it harder. Even if a vehicle were to have an automatic tail lift....still NO! That said...and has has been touched on already, being that there are so many different permutations (WAV only/mixed fleet/saloon hacks), there may not be a single, perfect solution.

Leveling the camber of the road, lowering the kerb and providing a wheelchair loading space on the front of the rank would be a sh*t load easier than demolishing buildings to provide side loading space surely?.

Question is is this about safety or rank space? we seem to have two seperate arguments going on here.

Of course it's safer.

If you have ten cabs all in a line, then any effect from a rear shunt to the first vehicle, when loaded a wheelchair into the rear, is going to be none, as the cabs at the back will get hit first, if at all. :?

IMO the only danger will be when there is only one cab on the rank.

Mine wasn't cobbled together in a shed in Coventry from the cheapest car parts available.
It doesn't have a known habit of self combusting either

HMG says mine is safe. Where is your evidence to the contrary?

You seem to believe that the two are totally separate issues? In such an instance as this, it might not be the case.

I also stated that it might not be possible to have a spare space available.

As for demolishing buildings.... I feel I may be trying to do so with my head ](*,) Talk about over-dramatising! I would pray that disabled taxi users don't have to face such an attitude as your post displayed, too often.

Neither does mine.......indeed whilst your vehicle manufacturer made vehicles for fascists during the second world war, mine built them for Nazis!

But of course in mine I dont load disabled passengers into the crumple zone of the vehicle, the part of the vehicle which is specifically designed to give way in the event of an accident......although if you insist I will try to do this in the future

TV’s Kim calls for safer taxi access for all

Rear-loading taxis should be banned from carrying wheelchair users in a bid to improve safety for passengers.

That’s the view of actress Kim Tserkezie, star of BBC children’s programme Balamory, who suffered a fractured knee, pulled ligaments and severe cuts and bruises after being thrown out of her wheelchair onto the floor when the taxi she was travelling in stopped suddenly.

She believes that she would not have been injured if she had been in a side-loading, wheelchair accessible taxi.

The brave mother-of-one is backing Taxiwise – the campaign committed to all issues surrounding the safer use of taxis – to outlaw the conversion vans and MPVs used as taxis where wheelchair users have to enter and exit through a rear door.

“For wheelchair users, I do not think rear-loading taxis are a safe option and they should not be allowed to be used,” said the 32-year-old, who plays Penny Pocket in the hit kids’ TV show.

“For years I have expressed concerns about rear-loading vehicles. Being right at the back, I am always concerned about what will happen if another vehicle hits it from behind. “Also, how do I then get out if the door is damaged? It is not a problem if it is side-loading only. There should be a rule that there have to be two exits.”

When the accident happened, Kim’s wheelchair had been secured to the floor of the Ford Connect but a seatbelt to hold her in her seat was not fitted by the drivers and was not visible for her to do it herself.

Taxiwise believes the main concerns surrounding rear-loading vehicles used as taxis are: Danger to passengers from cars approaching from the rear as they get in and out from the road No exit in the event of the rear door being damaged No protection for the passenger in the event of a rear collision Inadequate safety measures to keep wheelchair users securely in place.

”I rely on cabs to get around and use them on a daily basis but I am becoming increasingly concerned about the type of vehicle used, particularly the rear-loading vehicles like the Fiat Doblo and the VW Sharan,” added Kim.

“If I had been in black cab, for instance, this wouldn’t have happened as I would have been properly strapped in and had my back facing forward.”

Disabled passenger cut free from taxi after Froxfield crash

By Lewis Cowen »

A disabled man had to be cut free from the wreckage of a minibus taxi that went out of control and crashed in Froxfield last Friday afternoon.

The female driver lost control in slippery, wet conditions and the Vauxhall Vivaro crashed into a telegraph pole shortly after 1pm.

Though the driver escaped injury, there was concern for the male passenger who sustained a head injury. Initially it was feared he had a fractured skull but paramedics found it was just a deep cut. He was taken by land ambulance to Great Western Hospital in Swindon and was released after treatment. Electricians from Southern Electric made safe the power lines attached to the pole. The road was closed for two hours while the work was done.
