Benefit cheats cautioned in matchday crackdown

CAR park workers were cautioned by police for suspected benefit fraud during a match day crime crackdown around Manchester United's ground.

The operation was launched during the club's European game against Besiktas and involved Trafford council inspectors, benefit investigators, environmental health teams and police.

Four people working in car parks were cautioned for potential benefit fraud offences. Seven mobile food traders were inspected, with one found to be operating without hot water.

Licensing officers questioned 20 hackney and private hire drivers suspected of illegally 'touting' for trade.

A generator at one car park was removed because of noise issues and a street trader was cautioned by police for trading in a residential area.

Over 60 illegal signs were also removed from public highways.

Trafford councillor John Reilly said: “This partnership action should serve as a warning to all those who think they can commit crime and fraud on match days that it won't be tolerated in Trafford.”

One noisy Generator and 60 Illegal signs removed...tis good to see that our very expensive and highly trained though exceedingly thin blue line are not wasting their time with trival issues

We got stung a few years ago when we went to a match at OT, we were told by a guy that we could park outside of this garage for £5, he was dressed up with a green PPI jacket on he told us he worked for the garage on security, when we came back to find a ticket on all the cars that were parked there, we found a copper who told us that this guy didn't work at the garage, he was taking upon himself to tell supporters that they could park there for £5.

He was making a right killing at £5 a car.
