 Post subject: Taxi roof lights/signs

Hi new to the forum and still quite new to the taxi trade (18 months) so this is my first of many questions.

My question is, as a Taxi, is it mandatory to have a roof sign on the vehicle?

I just thought as we are not private hire, we should advertise the fact that we are infact licensed taxi's.

I just get annoyed that a few choose to run around the area like private hires but still pick up from the street without the roof light when given the chance.

In a slight way i can understand why this may be the case. Approx 90% of the areas work is off the phone. Most punters don't know we are public hire as we drive saloons, the 3 bordering areas all drive shiny E7's, TX's etc so most don't try hail us thinking we are private hire.

As you are in Scotland, the answer will be in the conditions attached to your taxi (plate) licence.

Which council area is it?

Just read the conditions, it says all we need to put on the vehicle is what the council issues us with, anything else has to be approved. So all in all its only the front, back and side plates.

East Dunbartonshire

condition 10

The Licence holder shall ensure that while the vehicle is in use as a taxi, any plates or other signage which have been issued by the council for the purpose of indicating that the vehicle is a taxi, are displayed at all times in positions approved by the council.

All the give us is front and back plate, side cards and no smoking stickers.

Condition 12

The licenceholder shall not display on the outside of the taxi any signs for the purpose of advertising its services as a taxi, other than those approved by the council, subject to the terms of any relevant legislation.

Nearly all cars have roof signs with either TAXI or the company name that they are working from.

If your public hire you should have a taxi sign on the roof, does the word taxi not mean anything.
The reason why your not getting the flag downs is because you have not put one on the roof, and it must be wired through the meter so that once the hired button is pressed the light goes out, once the job is finished and the light comes back on ready for the next job.
You can put your company name on the front if you wish and your phone number on the back

If your private hire you are not allowed to have a top sign, you will have a plate front and back or possibly the back only and possibly door stickers with pre booked only

There are councils in England-shire that do allow top signs on private hire vehicles

How did a taxi get passed by the inspectors if it didn't have a fully functioning top sign?

This is my point exactly. I spent the money for a fully functional top light that works with the meter, I only wanted to know if this was legit as it annoys me that we are taxi's NOT private hire but these guys are running around regardless

There is no other condition which says "must have an approved taxi sign" or similar wording?

If not then they don't need one.
IMHO running without one is going to cost them money and cause them hassle when trying to pick up pre booked office jobs.

Why get a taxi badge and plate, then disguise themselves as PH? :?

You could ask the council to add such a condition - in the interests of public safety :wink:

Ours says this:
