Taxi driver punched and kicked

POLICE in Swindon have launched a manhunt after a 59-year-old taxi driver was punched and kicked to the ground.

Shortly before 2.30am on Sunday, Rawinder Sahota, arrived in Lacock Road, Penhill, to drop off his three passengers – a man and two women.

Mr Sahota asked for his fare, and after one of the females paid he was met with a barrage of abuse from the man.

The driver got out of his vehicle and was seriously assaulted with the offender punching him in the head causing him to fall and then continued to punch and kick the victim as he lay on the ground.

The three then ran off into Pewsham Road, Penhill. Mr Sahota recalls seeing another taxi driver who pulled up nearby and a woman who came to his aid until police arrived.

He was taken to Great Western Hospital where he was treated for his injuries, which included painful swelling and bruises to his head, face and shoulder.

PC Stefan Watts said: “This was a nasty attack and I would like to hear from any witnesses who haven’t yet come forward or anyone who knows the identity of the three people involved.”

The man was described as white, aged in his 20s with dark short shaved hair, of medium build and 5ft 8ins tall.

The first woman was described as white, 5ft 2ins tall, of medium build, with straight shoulder length brunette hair.

She was wearing a white top with a black cardigan and a black skirt which was just above the knee. She had a local accent.

The second woman was white, also 5ft 2ins tall and of medium build. She had light coloured hair which was cut just above the shoulder and was wearing dark clothing.

Again as terrible as this is why did the driver get out of the vehicle and what exactly were his intentions. Why can't drivers see the sense in just driving away once the idiot passengers are out of the vehicle

If the intention was to do him over why beat him up after paying the fare?
I'm not condoning the act, I'm just curious to know why they did it after paying the bloody fare!! The trio didn't rob him and/or steal the car so what was his motive?.... Was he provoked by the driver? One has to be rational over such things......

Here's a completely mad idea. What if the driver is actually telling the truth, that originally only one of the three passengers appeared to have a problem? Of course, possibly not, but it's probably wise to let the police do their job as any of us could create a myriad of theories, that may be anything from 100% correct...to a million miles out!

I would agree with sussex that there's no point trying to make sense of anything drink or drug fuelled idiots do (we've all witnessed plenty of such behaviour). Where I do take issue with the driver's actions however, is when you have received payment, yet still choose to get out of your vehicle and confront someone!!!

Hell, most people have experienced "red mist" when faced with a "runner" for example, but for a 59 year old not to have the sense to just drive away, because he may have been called names... when he had already been paid! Possibly a version of the "sticks and stones" lesson, but learned the hard way!

Could be six of one half a dozen of the other, disagreement over fare? Male felt threatened by driver getting out to confront him, male overreacts.....
