Taxi driver dies of heart attack after bust-up with teenagers

A taxi driver died of a heart attack after a row with a group of teenagers. Mohammed Latif, 47, a married father of ten, collapsed at the wheel of his mini-bus which hit a wall on Spring Gardens in Middleton shortly after 1am on Sunday.

His nephew Shafaq Khan, 36, boss of nearby Diamond Cars, ran out of his office and tried in vain to revive Mr Latif - but he died in the vehicle. Mr Khan said: “We don't blame anybody. I tried to pump his heart but I think he had already died. It just happened. That's life.”

Paying tribute to his uncle, Mr Khan added: “Everybody in the community will tell you he was a was a very generous and gentle man. I got so many phone calls from people young and old to tell me what a nice man he was.”

Mr Latif had told family he had been feeling unwell in the days before the heart-attack. Minutes before he collapsed at the wheel, Mr Latif and a number of other drivers had been involved in an altercation with a group teenage boys in a row about a fare.

The tragic driver had gone to pick up the youths earlier in the evening. The four teenage boys had told him they did not have money to pay up front but would get the cash once they arrived at their destination.

When Mr Latif refused to take them, he was threatened and raised the alarm with other taxi drivers in the area. The other drivers raced to his aid and police say there was a fight which left two of the teenagers with minor injuries.

The police were called but by the time officers arrived at the scene the taxi drivers had gone. Mr Latif was later found collapsed at the wheel of his minibus on Spring Gardens, a road at the rear of Diamond Cars office on Rochdale Road in Middleton. A post mortem later concluded he died of natural causes.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “Shortly before 1.10am, police were called to Rochdale Road, Middleton following reports of fighting. “Officers attended and discovered there had been an argument between four teenage boys and a number of taxi drivers.

“It is believed that the argument was about a taxi fare and some verbal abuse was aimed at one taxi driver. Two of the teenage boys had been assaulted and suffered minor injuries. “The taxi drivers had left before police arrived. Inquiries are continuing.”
