Man critically injured in fall from taxi in Newcastle

Police are appealing for a taxi driver to get in touch after a man was critically injured in a fall from a moving cab in Newcastle.

He suffered serious head injuries and was taken to hospital where his condition is described as critical.

The 23-year-old, from North Tyneside was being driven along Jesmond Road in the early hours.

A police spokesman said it was believed the vehicle was a black cab.

Anyone with any information about the incident, which happened close to the Swallow Hotel at 0350 BST, is asked to contact Northumbria Police.

Do black cab doors not lock when going at a certain speed

Yes they do, BUT some of the conversions have weird door locking systems that would never meet the London CoF.

When I ordered mine from Voyager, this was one of the things I checked was up to sratch.

They must have altered the door locking system on their newer vehicles.When i purchased my le cab noir in 2004 there was a delay in the door unlocking when you took your foot of the brake, it was a real nuisance.

It never ceases to amaze me! how does a door open on its own? and how does a person who is sitting properly in a vehicle manage to fall out?

If sat in a seat properly all the doors could be open whilst being driven, and unless the driver was driving like a complete lunatic it just would not happen. A black cab could not be driven far with a door open as it opens wider than most and would end up getting smashed up.

Also, in the LTI cabs the doors are locked so that the inside handles will not open the doors.

But if the passenger was trying to do a runner, then they are all too savvy to know that if you open the window & use the outside door handles, they still operate & the doors can be opened using these handles, even when the motion locking is in operation.

Taxi passenger critical after fall

A man is fighting for life in hospital after he fell from what is believed to be a moving taxi.

The victim, a 23-year-old from North Tyneside, suffered serious head injuries in the accident.

Last night he was described by a police spokeswoman as being “critical with life threatening injuries”.

The man was travelling in what is believed to be a black taxi going towards Newcastle with a friend at around 3.50am near the Swallow Hotel, Jesmond, Newcastle, when the accident happened.

One of the passengers got out of the vehicle safely but the other passenger fell out as the vehicle was moving.

The passenger was taken to Newcastle General Hospital by paramedics.

Jesmond Road was closed for several hours while Northumbria Police’s motor patrols officers investigated.

Police are now appealing for the driver of the black vehicle or any other witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Phil King of Newcastle Motor Patrols said: “We urgently need to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed this incident.

“We also need to contact the driver of this vehicle. At the present time it is unclear what has happened which has led to this man being injured.”
