Eight-year-old hoodies attack Corby taxi

23 October 2010

A gang of six hooded yobs with members as young as eight attacked a taxi carrying a mum and her two-year-old daughter.

The gang of hooligans aged between eight and 10threw "a hard object" at a moving Hackney carriage, smashing a window and showering the driver in shards of glass.

The vehicle was at the junction of Farmstead Road and Greenhill Rise, Corby, when it came under attack.

The offenders are described as a group of six white youths, all wearing sports clothing.

One was wearing a grey hooded top and another one a dark brown hooded top.

Chief Inspector Gary Williams said: "Thankfully this sort of incident is rare, but nonetheless this is an absolutely awful crime which could have had extremely dire consequences.

"It could potentially have injured the people in the taxi and caused the taxi to be involved in a collision."

"This reckless behaviour could have resulted in a much more serious incident, not to mention the horrific impact it has had on the mother, her child and the driver."

"We would appeal for anyone with any information to contact the police."
Another Corby taxi driver Rory O'Connor said a vehicle he owned had come under attack in the same area, although he wasn't driving it at the time."

The incident took place on Sunday, October 17, between 1.45pm and 2.15pm, and caused nearly £200 of damage to the vehicle.

He said: "My main concern was getting the vehicle ready to go back to work the next day, and the cost was sickening."

Mr O'Connor said it was not an isolated incident.

"I know of three instances where windows have been smashed in that area and I'm hoping the parents will see this article."

Richard Barr, 62, of Greenhill Rise, said: "It is quiet around this area."

"I have got good neighbours."

"Sometimes you see kids out throwing stones but it is very rare. In a way it is a shock."

"You hear stories about kids throwing stones at buses all the times, but you don't see much of it down here. They are off school today but there are hardly any of them about."

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the police on 03000 111222.

I see that they all prattle out the same statement! It happened in Newport some 8 years ago and more or less the same statement came out, a week or so later it comes out that something like 37 buses had been stoned in the previous month
