Cabbies praised

10:42am Saturday 4th December 2010

Taxi drivers in York have been praised by the council’s licensing officer for “battling on” through the bad weather.

John Lacy said: “I have received calls from taxi customers praising hackney carriage and private hire drivers for carrying on regardless of the adverse weather, when bus companies had taken their fleets off the road.”

Mr Lacy acknowledged that taxi drivers in the city had recently undergone bad press following a series of spot checks on cars by the council, but said he had seen taxis lined up at a rank during the heaviest recent snow. “Credit should be given where credit was due,” he said.

Barry Hamer, chairman of York Private Hire Association, described the efforts of his members as “impressive”.

I said it's not the biggest - but it's not the "least" either.
