Woman, 90, quits cab driver job after 63 years

January 14, 2011 1:30AM

A 90-year-old woman who is believed to be the UK's oldest cab driver has put the brakes on her career after 63 years behind the wheel, the Grimsby Telegraph reported on Thursday.

May Evans, from Holton-le-Clay in Grimsby, northern England, has been a cab driver since 1947 and was the area's first female cabbie. She was picking up passengers from her regular spot until November last year, when she turned 90.

She has now decided it is the end of the road for her career, but has vowed to keep driving herself around.

Evans, who has never made an insurance claim in her career, said, "I chose to finish, but I feel as though I could have carried on. I have enjoyed every minute of it, but I won't miss it, it is just the right time for me to stop."

Evans served in the army for seven years and during World War II she was a night convoy driver. In 1947 she qualified as a cab driver after taking a course at the same place where Queen Elizabeth II learned to drive.

Very well done, and I wish her well.

That said I would love to have seen the expression on punters faces when they got into her cab.

Priceless.

I'd be interested to know the current age of the oldest male taxi driver and of course his length of service to the public :D

We have "Rocket Ron" like me he served in the Royal Navy - unlike me he was in WWII. I'll ask if he cares to disclose his age. I do know he has been a Hackney driver since he was demobbed.
