Its a bit of a gray area in a court,I think if you rent the plate out you have to have your name on the insurance of the vehicle its attached to,or else your liable to lose it in court !

I know there's case law..............thats why the renters lose 'their' plates.

You may well ask, but 4 of them have done it, they were renting them from proprietors, and had them on their own vehicles, so they went to the Council and proved that they owned the vehicles and although the Council knew they did not own the plates, they put their name on the licence, to comply with the law, one owner lost 2, a really nice old guy lost 1, and a nice couple who are pensioners now have no income and no plate, and the best part is these thieves dont think they have done anything wrong.

So more pandering to illegal activity - those involved are handed a plate worth tens of thousands. ](*,)

so if the car owner renting the plate just stops paying the rent what can the "owner" do, go round and swipe it off the car?

Not a grey area at all - it's basic illegality.

What in fact you mean is if you manage to hide the illegality by misrepresenting the true facts on the documentation you can get away with it, and thus illegally profiteer with impunity.

Or even be handed a plate worth tens of thousands

No, because the owner of the car is the legal 'owner' of the license. The mere fact that someone maybe living in Spain claims to be the owner is neither here nor there.

You sure are right Sussex, it has happened in Brighton, and the "owner" is still driving that plate now on Streamline!

there is a natural order and justice to most things, if a plate owner wants money off a plate they know the risks, or they can do it the right way, own a vehicle and have a partner or jockey

The plate 'owner' gets a regular annual income from the plate. It's the council!!

ok, the plate holder (as against the car owner)

though the plate is always the LAs property (like a UK passport, to be surrendered on demand)

Well I'm sure, but more importantly the folks with the white wigs are equally as sure.
