Taxi driver denies groping one female passenger and trying to kiss another

A taxi driver groped a lone female passenger after telling her "you don't need to pay", a jury was told.

Shawky Gabriel, 49, fondled the woman's thigh and breast after taking her home from a night out with friends in a Lincolnshire town, it is alleged.

Gabriel – who worked under the name "Joe's Taxis" – is also accused of trying to kiss a second customer a week after the first sexual assault.

Lincoln Crown Court heard Gabriel took advantage of being on his own with the women after picking them up on consecutive Saturday nights.

Jon Straw, prosecuting, said the first attack took place in May last year when one of the women got into the front seat of Gabriel's cab after a night out in Stamford.

Giving evidence, the blonde, in her mid-30s, admitted being a "little merry" after drinking white wine spritzers and a couple of vodkas during a karaoke evening.

Gabriel allegedly started to touch her leg and breast before she was eventually about to get away.

When questioned by police Gabriel claimed the woman led him on by saying: "I really wish I had a boyfriend like you".

Gabriel, 49, of Primrose Way, Stamford, denies two charges of sexual assault on May 24 and 31 last year.

The trial continues.

This is a local case I did put a post up about it when it originally happened last year

he doesn't drive taxis anymore the only problem for me is that he lives just round the corner and I have already had one passenger get the two mixed up because his address was published in the paper
What amazes me is that hios wife has stood by him despite there having been two seperate incidents reported to police and a third which apparently was not all within a 3 month period

Maybe she's waiting to see if he's found guilty. Perhaps she just loves him anyway, who knows how the mind works

Do you know that for sure...or is it just a Hunch????

He is currently working at a ,local chipshop where the rest of the staff are all female ! This hasn't gone down well with some of the staff although apparently two of them actually testified for him as character witnesses

Oh and his wife although she has stood by him has apparently hit the bottle hard

15 months.

Cabbie jailed for sexual assault of female passenger has sentence cut

A cab driver who kissed a lone woman on the mouth after dropping her home late at night had his sentence slashed by top judges.

Shawky Gabriel, 49, was jailed for 15 months at Lincoln Crown Court in September last year after he was convicted of sexually assaulting the young woman.

Mr Justice Eady said Gabriel, of Primrose Way, Stamford, picked up the woman in his cab after she spent the night in the town.

Once there, however, he got into the back seat next to her and kissed her on the mouth.

Mr Justice Eady told London's Criminal Appeal Court that Gabriel had pulled his victim towards him and "tried to grab her again" when she resisted.

He finally desisted, said the judge, but the woman fled inside and called her boyfriend.

Mr Justice Eady, sitting with Lord Justice Richards and Sir Christopher Holland, said Gabriel had betrayed the trust of his passenger, but ruled that his sentence was excessive.

"We believe that a shorter sentence would serve the justice of the case," he said, cutting Gabriel's sentence from 15 to nine months.
