Severed arm murder victim named

Detectives investigating the discovery of a severed arm in a lake have named the man it belonged to. Fishermen discovered the limb at the water off Roding Lane in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, at 2.50pm on Thursday.

Officers immediately cordoned off the area and marine divers searched the lake for more evidence and confirmed they had found another arm. A 53-year-old man is being questioned on suspicion of murder.

Essex Police issued a statement saying: "Police are now able to confirm the name of the man whose arm was discovered at a lake on Thursday in Buckhurst Hill as 47-year-old Anthony Whitefield from the Loughton area.

"Anthony Whitefield was reported missing to Essex Police by a member of his family and had not been seen since Tuesday, February 8, 2011. "Mr Whitefield's family describe him as 'a loving bubbly person with plenty of friends'. They have asked that members of the press respect their privacy at this difficult time."

Officers from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate are continuing to search the water and surrounding area for Mr Whitefield's body, they said. Mr Whitefield, a former taxi driver, was believed to be a father of five.

Three weeks ago his daughter, Carmen Whitefield, 22, from Bishop's Stortford, appealed for help in tracing him, telling Hertfordshire's The Scene: "It's been really hard on the whole family, especially for my sister, who lived with him. One night he didn't come home and she just thought he was with his girlfriend, but when she called the next day to ask where he was that's when we started worrying."

Douglas Binet, who is accused of murdering Loughton taxi driver Anthony Whitefield, is due back in court next month

A MAN accused of murdering a taxi driver and hiding his body parts is due to return to court next month.

Douglas Binet, 53, is charged with murdering 47-year-old father of five Anthony Whitefield, of Bryony Close, Loughton.

Mr Whitefield’s arms were found in a lake off Greensted Road, Loughton, earlier in the year and further body parts were discovered at Binet’s home in Hanson Drive, also in Loughton.

Binet is due to enter a plea Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on September 12.

He is expected to deny the charge and a trial has provisionally been set for November 14.
