Test Purchases On Taxis At British Grand Prix

South Northamptonshire Council’s licensing officers will be carrying out test purchases on both hackney carriages (taxis) and private hire vehicles over the British Grand Prix weekend (8 - 10 July) this year.
This is to ensure that passengers are not being picked up by taxis and private hire vehicles which haven’t been pre-booked - a criminal offence called plying for hire. Any driver caught will face legal action for plying for hire and no insurance and their activities will be reported to the appropriate licensing authority. The exercise also follows incidents of unlicensed vehicles picking up people in the Silverstone, Whittlebury and Towcester areas in the past.
Getting into a vehicle plying for hire invalidates the driver’s insurance and makes it difficult for passengers to receive compensation if the vehicle is involved in an accident.
