Drink driving taxi owner caught by police twice on the same day

A man who appeared at court twice on the same day for separate offences has been jailed for 90-days.

Anthony Olson, 63, of Wrotham Road, Welling, appeared before Medway Magistrates Court on Wednesday, May 29, after being charged with drink driving.

On December 11, 2012, Olson had been driving his taxi when he was stopped by officers in Somerset Road, Dartford. His breath test showed him to be almost four times over the legal drink drive limit. After admitting the offence he was sentenced to a 30-month driving ban and a 90-day suspended prison sentence.

He was released from Medway Magistrates Court at 11.30am.

At approximately 1pm the same day Kent Police officers spotted Olson driving his black cab in Crayford High Street. He was arrested and taken into custody at North Kent Police station. He was charged with driving whilst disqualified at 3.30pm and appeared via Virtual Court at Medway Magistrates at around 4.30pm. The Magistrate imposed a 36-month driving ban and sentenced him to 90-days imprisonment.

Insp Bob Platt said: “Olson showed a blatant disregard for the law by getting behind the wheel and picking up fares literally hours after being banned from driving.

“This case highlights the speed in which people can be progressed through the court system and in this instance we have not only been able to save time and money, but taken a potentially dangerous driver off the streets.

“The development of the Virtual Court network is a result of a close working relationship with the Kent Criminal Justice Board and we have managed to create a system that is fit for purpose and effective.

“Virtual Courts are the way forward for streamlining the criminal justice process and this case should send a message to those who so casually flout the law that they could be behind bars within hours of doing so.”

Virtual Courts have been in use by Kent Police since August 2009. They serve as a link between the police and magistrates allowing defendants to appear for their first hearing by video link from the police station.

Chf Insp Martin Wilson explained how Virtual Courts will assist officers who target drink drivers. He said: “Throughout the summer officers will be using Virtual Courts to fast track those charged drink driving. This means that people who admit driving under the influence could lose their licence within hours of being charged.’

Interesting. He gets a ban in the morning and gets caught in the afternoon. he gets a court appearance the same day and is found guilty and sent to prison the same day. I wonder if he was legally represented at the second hearing?

He would have been, but his second offence triggered the original suspended sentence.

So in effect he got jailed for offence number 1, not number 2.

Ah, I missed the suspended sentence bit. #-o

Now let me see. A 63-year-old taxi driver does what he has to do to earn a living while not giving a fuc* and ends up back in the pokey.

I must be missing something here?? :? :? :?
