Middlesbrough taxi driver denies sexually abusing girl in lay-by

A TAXI driver accused of abducting a 14-year-old girl and having sex with her in a lay-by claimed the teenager's mother asked for money to keep quiet.

Shakil Munir admitted exchanging explicit messages with the girl but said he never sexually abused her.

The 32-year-old told the jury at Teesside Crown Court on Monday he met the girl and her two friends after they called for a taxi.

The girls did not have any money but Mr Munir said he agreed to give them a lift because they were not going far.

The girls said they were all aged 16, the defendant told the court.

He said he was later contacted by one of the girls on Facebook and the pair exchanged messages, adding: "I was going through a bad patch and I was bored. We just started talking."

The girl claims Mr Munir had sex with her in his taxi in the early hours of the morning after picking her up from her home.

However, Mr Munir denied any sexual activity with the girl and rejected a claim he had threatened to throw her out of his taxi if she did not do what he wanted.

The court heard the taxi driver received a message on his phone from the girl's mother while they were out.

The woman warned the defendant that she would call the police and have him "branded a paedophile" if he did not return her daughter.

Mr Munir said the girl's mother wanted to speak to him and it was only when he visited her home later that morning that he found out the teenager was only 14.

It was during this conversation that the defendant claimed the mother asked for money.

"She said if you give me some money I'll keep it quiet - we will call it squits," Mr Munir said.

"She asked me for £500. I said I had done nothing wrong."

Shakil Munir, of Tollesby Road, Middlesbrough, is charged with four counts of sexual activity with a child and a single charge of child abduction.

Two other men deny various charges including sexual activity with a child.

A 17-year-old youth is charged with three counts of arranging or facilitating commission of a child sex offence.

The trial continues.

Harsh but effective, personally I like the idea of cutting their balls and hands off and if at all possible making their little man fit for pee pee only. I'm kind of liking the idea that they have to live with what they did for the rest of their lives.

Maybe the BBC should re-name their satirical show to "Have I got noose For You"?

Taxi driver 'confronted by mother'

A taxi driver from Middlesbrough accused of having under-age sex with two girls aged 13 and 14 deactivated his Facebook account after he was confronted by one of their mothers, a court has heard.

Shakil Munir, 32, had lots of young female friends on his profile, and sent one girl explicit messages, engaging in conversations with her about anal and oral sex, Teesside Crown Court heard.

He denies five counts of sexual activity with a child and one count of child abduction.

He is in the dock with three others - two 18-year-olds and one aged 17 - who are also accused of sexually exploiting children. They also deny all the charges against them.

Munir, from Tollesby Road, Middlesbrough, was accused of stopping in a lay-by on the A19 for sex with a 14-year-old after she asked him to take her to a 24-hour shop for cigarettes in the early hours.

He told the jury on Monday no sex took place and he believed the girl was 16 when he took her for a drive in January.

Her mother was waiting for him to return with the girl, who cannot be identified, and she confronted him about his Facebook conversations with the teenager.

Christopher Knox, prosecuting, asked why he got his Facebook profile deactivated after speaking to the girl's mother.

"I just deactivated it because I was getting into trouble," the twice-married defendant replied.

Mr Knox asked if there were "inappropriate messages with inappropriately young girls" on it.

"No," Munir replied.

Explicit Facebook messages between the taxi driver and the schoolgirl he insisted he believed was 16 were read out, and these included references to anal and oral sex.

Mr Knox asked whether Munir had not considered it an "inappropriate" topic, given her age and the fact he hardly knew her.

"I was just being stupid," the defendant replied. "I should have known better."

Mr Knox said: "You knew perfectly well what you were doing.

"You were making progress with this girl. You understand what grooming is, don't you? Is not this grooming?"

Munir replied: "Not if she was over 16."

Asked if it was true he had a lot of "young girls" on his Facebook profile, the Bradford-born defendant replied: "There were a lot of girls, I cannot say how old they were."

Munir is also charged with having sex with a 13-year-old who was in care. The offence was said to have happened in the same week as he allegedly took the 14-year-old to the lay-by for sex.

Grooming trial: Shakil Munir found guilty on four counts of sexual activity with a child

Jury also finds 32-year-old guilty of one of child abduction :: Two other men, both aged 18, are cleared of all charges

A taxi driver accused of having sex with a 14-year-old schoolgirl in a lay-by has been found guilty of four counts of sexual activity with a child.

A Teesside Crown Court jury has also just found Shakil Munir guilty of one count of child abduction.

The decision came with a 10-1 majority.

Munir, 32, of Tollesby Road, Tollesby, Middlesbrough, had denied all of the charges.

The jurors will continue considering verdicts in three charges against an unnamed 17-year-old boy tomorrow morning.

The teenager denies three counts of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence.

Earlier this afternoon, two other defendants in the trial - over alleged sexual grooming and exploitation - were cleared of all charges they faced.

Ibrar Mahmood, of Breckon Hill Road, Longlands , Middlesbrough, was cleared of four counts of sexual activity with a child.

The 18-year-old was also acquitted of three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Junaid Butt, of Kensington Road, Linthorpe , Middlesbrough, was cleared of one charge of sexual activity with a child.

Butt, also aged 18, was cleared of one charge of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence.

The pair have been on trial with Munir and the teenager at Teesside Crown Court.

The not-guilty verdicts concerning the two 18-year-olds were all unanimous.

'Massive damage' to abuse victims

A judge condemned friends and associates of a group of men from Middlesbrough who sexually exploited girls as young as 13 after hearing the victims were subjected to continuing "appalling" abuse at school.

There was a strong police presence as members of the English Defence League gathered outside the courtroom at Teesside Crown Court where taxi driver Shakil Munir, 32, and teenagers Sakib Ahmed and his friend Ateeq Latif were being sentenced for their roles in the abuse of underage victims.

Christopher Knox, prosecuting, said the six Middlesbrough girls had suffered "considerable, ongoing damage".

He added: "Not just by what happened, but what has happened to them subsequently as a result of them having come forward."

Mr Knox said the young witnesses had been pressured during the trial by locals not to give evidence, and it was impossible to say precisely who was responsible.

"The damage to these girls has been massive," he said.

"They have been repeatedly abused at their schools. They have been subject to name calling - suggestions such as 'white trash' and being goaded in the classroom.

"Comments like 'don't touch her, she will have you done for rape' and the suggestion they have been bombarded with abusive messages on Facebook, calling them sluts and accusing them of being racist."

Mr Knox said one victim was told she "deserved everything she had got".

A support worker at one school, which cannot be identified to protect the victims' anonymity, said one of the girls had developed a "don't care attitude" which was unlike her.

Judge John Walford, who will pass sentence, said: "That the girls should be shamed is appalling but that reflects the depths of distorted, deviant thinking which is the sort of thinking which has allowed these offences to happen both here and elsewhere.

"But in fairness, can this be laid at the door of these defendants?"

Mr Knox agreed that the defendants had not "orchestrated" the backlash against the victims. "But those who perceive themselves as acting in their interest have undoubtedly done so," he said.

Munir picked up one 14-year-old in his cab and had sex with her in a lay-by late at night. The same week he took a 13-year-old to a "chill pad" for sex.

A letter was put forward on his behalf expressing the shame he had brought on his family.

The judge said: "The concept of shame felt by any of these defendants sits uneasily with family, friends and associates behaving as they have done.

"One might have expected that if these defendants really took full responsibility then that feeling would have been spread amongst family, friends and associates to ensure that there was, rather than a condemnatory attitude towards these girls, a feeling of sympathy and support."

Munir was said to have 200 girls "on his phone", but he deleted their details before his arrest.

After a trial he was convicted of two counts of sexual activity with a child, relating to two victims, and abduction.

Ahmed, who worked at a pizza shop, was described as "predatory". He admitted five counts of sexual activity with a child, relating to five different girls.

He would take girls out in his silver Vauxhall Corsa and then pressure them into giving him oral sex or full intercourse.

His friend Latif, 17, was convicted of two counts of arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sex offence.

He helped Ahmed by going along with him on drives, then taking one girl away for a walk to leave his friend alone in the car with a young victim.

Two co-accused teenagers were cleared of all charges at the trial in December.
