Got this request for information via e-mail.

Could you please tell me how you buy a plate and how much do they cost. I have had the offer of a black cab R reg with a plate for £15,000. The owner is saying it is a abragin as plate can sell for £20000. Is this true? Where can I fin dout how much a palte costs please. I am trying to work out if I am being robbed or not and if it is worth the gamble of leaving the private hire and going for a hackney licence.

If something seems to good to be true, then more times than not it is.

So unless this bloke selling you his plate is a fool, then he is more than likely trying to take you for one.

If I was you I would ring your local council and ask them if they can guaruntee taxi quotas for the next 10-15 years.

If they can't then keep your money in the bank.

Beware of anyone trying to shift his plate premium onto someone else, especially when the council are deciding whether to keep premiums in the first place.
