I am grateful to the Oxford Reference Encyclopaedia for the following appropriate definition:
PSYCHOSIS - Serious forms of MENTAL ILLNESS in which thinking and feeling become so aberrant that the individual loses a grip on reality, may suffer HALLUCINATIONS and delusions (as in PARANOIA), yet fails to appreciate anything is wrong. The symptoms can be a sign of brain damage, due for example to longstanding ALCOHOL ABUSE, or the result of taking such drugs as LSD. Otherwise the symptoms are most likely to indicate that the person is suffering from SCHIZOPHRENIA or MANIC DEPRESSION, the two most common forms of psychosis. Psychosis can be contrasted with Neurosis, in which the individual is fully aware of his or her irrational behaviour or emotional reactions. It has been said that neurotics believe that two and two make four, but are worried by the conclusion, while psychotics have every confidence in their belief that two and two make five.
Psychotic or Neurotic?
