We had a school contract to take 2 students to school. the price was £54.00 per day. One of the students needed the driver to be female so we moved things around to accommodate this. Then the school changed their closing time in the afternoon from 15.30 to 15.10. This gave us a problem because the female driver was on a different school job at 15.00 and couldn't get to the second school until 15.30. So rather than ask the students to wait the 20 minutes the Council put the job back out to tender. The winning price is £124.00 per day so that 20 minutes has cost an extra £70.00 per day.

You couldnt realistically expect students hang around for twenty minutes, the whole idea is that you should be able to suit the councils timings and not them yours.

When we got the job the pick up time was 15.30. It was changed 3 days before the school term began. Some of the students have to wait until 15.40 because they catch the service bus home because there is no school bus.

Looks like your Councils Student Passenger transport team are a complete bunch of numpties

When I did a LCC job, 1 pupil with escort into Ibstock for 10am who couldnt sit/wait in the car or outside due to his condition, they wanted me to take on another pupil to a different school regardless of timings

years ago with education authorities they seemed to be VERY price conscious but in the last couple of years they seem to be willing to pay almost anything. Plenty of drivers and firms bragging round here about the obscene amounts of money they are quoting for contracts and getting them

I think part of that is that the trade has changed, maybe for now, and there are fewer drivers out there and virtually no younger drivers joining the fun.

Many school runs are done by older drivers, often with their partners as escorts, and covid/lockdowns has led to a lot of them giving up.

Mate of mine does a school run which takes about 2 hours round trip for £100 a run. His escort, his misses, get £35 a run.

That's £5,400 a month for his household. For 20 hours a week.

The new contract that I have started this week is a SEND contract. Yesterday afternoon I arrived at 15.00 for a 15.20 pick up and i got the student on board at 15.40 and there were still at least 15 more taxis behind me so 20 minutes wait for these students seems quite acceptable.
