'Taxi driver' indecently exposed himself to two women in Middlesbrough in early-morning incident

A driver indecently exposed himself after pulling over to speak to two women in Middlesbrough.

The incident occurred when the two women were walking along Corporation Road in the early hours of the morning. A silver Skoda Octavia with dark coloured taxi stickers pulled up alongside them.

A man began talking to them before indecently exposing himself. An investigation is under way following the incident and detectives are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Cleveland Police has issued a description of the suspect who is said to be an Asian male with dark hair aged between his late 20s and early 30s. A spokesperson for the force said: "He has also been described as thin in build and was wearing dark-coloured clothing on the top and cream coloured trousers.

"Enquiries are ongoing including working with taxi companies." The incident is said to have taken place on Sunday, March 5 between 2.45am and 3am.

Anyone with information should contact Cleveland Police on 101, quoting reference number 042219. Independent charity Crimestoppers can also be contacted anonymously online at https://orlo.uk/rzj5X or by phone on 0800 555 111.

Not being funny but are police being a little blinkered here ?

Other vehicles apart from taxi/PH have door stickers or it could even be someone pretending to be a taxi/ph. I am not saying it wasn't but in my experience sometimes the police can make assumptions that lead them down a dead end as happened with the Alan Wood murder.

To be fair to police, maybe you're being swayed by Sussex's thread title, Edders.

The press headline above uses 'taxi driver' in inverted commas, which implies some uncertainty as to whether or not the suspect was actually a licensed driver.

In fact the official Cleveland Police news release doesn't say it's a taxi driver at all, and simply states that the vehicle had taxi stickers. Of course, even if it turns out not to be a real taxi, if the witnesses credibly say it had 'taxi stickers' then in terms of appealing for information it's surely reasonable to presume it's either a plated vehicle, or at least one purporting to be a proper 'taxi'.
