Was just thinking there haven't been so many articles recently about attacks on drivers, and then three come along at once :-o

This one's quite straightforward, though. And, for a change, neither perp seems to have much of a history. Maybe it's just me, but to that extent I'm surprised they got 40 months each :-o

(But, of course, their real history may not be shown in official records...)

Horror outside pub after pair asked taxi driver to pull over

Ryan Wynn, 27, and Ellis Mayall, 26, launched a brutal attack on the driver

Two drunk thugs forced a taxi driver to pull over before launching a brutal attack and robbing him of cash and equipment.

Ryan Wynn, 27, and Ellis Mayall, 26, had been out in Oldham when they were picked up by the cab on Oldham Road. As they drove away, they asked if he had change for £50, then ordered him to pull over nearby.

They then launched a brutal attack on the man, with Wynn grabbing him from behind through the headrest as Mayall punched him. Both then stole £60 in cash as well as some of his work equipment before running away.

Both have since pleaded guilty to robbery and were jailed on October 6 at Minshull Street Crown Court. Prosecuting, Katy Laverty said that the taxi driver picked up Wynn and Mayall from a cafe on Oldham Road, Royton on March 28 this year.

As he drove off, they asked him if he had any change for £50, which he said he didn’t. They then told him to pull up outside a pub.

“As soon as he stopped the car, Ellis Mayall punched the complainant whilst Ryan Wynn grabbed him from behind,” Ms Laverty said. “They then stole cash to the value of £60 as well as a PDR system.

“During the course of the robbery, the complainant sustained injuries including cuts and bruises to his lips, as well as a suspected broken nose.”

The man was unable to work for two weeks due to his injuries. He said in a statement: “I have been a taxi driver since 1989, and I have never been robbed before. I was left feeling really down and upset and it has made me think about whether I want to be a taxi driver any more.”

When Mayall was arrested, he told officers to ‘prove it’ as he was cautioned; and when Wynn was caught up with, officers found a knuckle duster in his coat pocket.

They both later admitted being present at the robbery but blamed each other. Wynn was said to have a previous conviction for driving offences and Mayall was said to be of previous good character.

For Wynn, Thomas McKail said this would be his first experience of custody and that he was ‘ashamed and remorseful’. “It was completely out of character,” he said, and described the incident as 'appalling'.

And for Mayall, Mark Fireman said the injury to the man’s nose was a ‘displaced fracture’. “I don’t think he really knows why he acted in this way. This man acted wholly and utterly out of character.”

Jailing them both, Recorder Joanne Woodward said: “The attack took place at night, in the complainant’s vehicle where he should have been safe and in circumstances where it was extremely difficult for him to make good his escape.

“He was left extremely distressed, which is understandable, as a result of this. I have no doubt this incident will play on his mind in the future.”

Wynn, of Crossley Street, Royton, and Mayall, of Garden Terrace, Royton, were both jailed for 40 months.

As we know robbery is a very serious offence, but what made this worse was that it was planned.
